Nottingham Forest are pushing to sign Gio Reyna from Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni Reyna could sign for Nottingham Forest before the end of the January transfer window after falling out of favour at Borussia Dortmund.

Forest have been looking to bolster their attacking options this window due to a lengthy injury list, and are pushing Dortmund to get the deal done, according to The Athletic. The 21-year-old has made just 10 Bundesliga appearances this season and only one league start despite scoring seven goals for the German side in 2022/23.

Negotiations are ongoing over an initial loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season, and although there are details to iron out, Forest are working hard to sign him before January 21. Reyna has played just 18 minutes for Dortmund this year after coming off the bench twice, with his position being filled by Jadon Sancho who joined on loan from Manchester United.

Dortmund are currently fifth in the Bundesliga and have made a good start to 2024, winning both matches away from home after the league restarted following the winter break. The young American remains one of the biggest talents for the USMNT, and was tipped to be a future star at Dortmund.

Reyna was valued as highly as Jude Bellingham and Sancho during their time at the club, but Dortmund boss Edin Terzic does not see him as part of his future plans. Forest are currently four points clear of the relegation zone and are in need of attacking options to maintain their Premier League status next season.

Star striker Taiwo Awoniyi, Anthony Elanga, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Divock Origi are currently sidelined for Forest, and manager Nuno Espirito Santo is desperate for more squad depth. In Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Brentford there were four Forest players on the bench with no Premier League experience due to a depleted squad.

The American is the son of former Manchester City and Sunderland player Claudio Reyna, who made over 100 appearances for the USMNT during his career. Gio Reyna was born in Sunderland before moving back to the United States with his family at the age of five, but went back to Europe in 2019 when being spotted by Dortmund.

After impressing at New York City FC's academy, a franchise founded by Manchester City's owners, Dortmund snapped him up and he quickly became a first-team regular. On January 18, 2020, Reyna made his Bundesliga debut aged just 17 years and 66 days, breaking Christian Pulisic's record as the youngest American to play in Germany's top flight.

A month later Reyna announced himself on the European stage when becoming the third-youngest player to appear in a Champions League knockout game. Reyna came off the bench to assist Erling Haaland who scored the game-winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain.

Reyna has made 89 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund over five seasons, scoring 13 and assisting 11 times. The American had a fibula issue at the start of the season, and Terzic has not been impressed since he returned to full fitness.
