A woman has told how her mother-in-law’s ‘unhealthy obsession’ with her son is causing huge problems in their marriage, leaving her ‘terrified’ of what she’ll do next.

After admitting she had always displayed ‘unnerving’ behaviour from the start of their relationship, she told how it began when her mother-in-law called her being affectionate towards ‘her boy’ akin to sexual abuse, before progressing on to telling her husband that the woman was taking drugs when she wasn’t.

She said: “My sister-in-law was the bigger issue for a very long time and I almost forgot how bad my mother-in-law was until my husband and I went no contact with sister-in-law and moved a little bit further away.” With a long list of red flags from her scheming mother-in-law she told how on one anniversary trip she had declared her and her husband would be joining them – and sharing their hotel room.

After going ‘no contact’ with her following the incident, the wife then told how she came round to the house one day threatening to break the door down if the couple didn’t let her in: “The second time we had to paint over the footprints on the door,” she recalled.

After both receiving texts from her out of the blue one day she said: “My husband’s message said that she loved him very much and it was 'death do us part’ for my husband and mother-in-law. She also threw in some weird comment about her being ‘the first and most important woman in his life,’”

However the text she received from her was far from kind, with her furious mother-in-law saying she had been: “Robbed of any relationship she had with her child and that when she passes away she hopes I will feel guilty for doing that to her.”

She continued: “I chose to respond (husband gave the ok for me to let her have it). I said absolutely everything I had wanted to over all these years, but held back for the sake of being the bigger person. Husband also responded to her and said he was over the way she treats both of us and how she refuses to respect either of us and she was blocked.”

However, at Christmas she left a bag on their doorstep, after being asked not to visit the house or buy any gifts, with a present inside that the couple found alarming: “She got him a matching couple’s bracelet from an expensive jewellery shop. She had the heart-shaped charm engraved with one side saying: ‘till death do us part, I’m eternally yours’ and the other side engraved with his childhood nickname. We were both creeped out and he immediately threw it away.”

After admitting she was pregnant, but scared to tell her mother-in-law because she was: “Concerned what will happen if she does find out,” she took to Reddit to see what readers thought of the unusual family dynamic.

Most readers were shocked to read her story, with many suggesting she went to the police over the mother-in-law’s concerning behaviour. “Please tell me that you made police reports of the door banging/kicking incidents and please pursue legal assistance in getting a restraining order against her. This sounds legit dangerous,” said one, while another reader commented: “The ‘bracelet’ gives me the creeps...get far, far away!”

Others agreed with the restraining order, with one saying it was: “The only way. Legal consequences for trespassing and being within X yards of your property. If you want to protect your child and avoid possible kidnapping (which it sounds like she is unhinged enough to try) you need to take LEGAL action where police can be involved.”

Another was terrified by the reference to marriage vows in relation to her own son: “This is beyond creepy af. Until death do us part … WTF. Please keep your distance, it will be worse with a baby involved." “Please stay safe, she sounds completely unhinged,” said another. “This is like Fatal Attraction but it’s his mum…”
