Sheffield United star Tom Davies has left fans baffled after shaving off his trademark hair and beard, but the move is all in the name raising of suicide awareness.

The Everton academy graduate had been growing out his blonde locks since his time at Goodison Park. The midfielder made 179 appearances for the Toffees and became known for his eye-catching style when it came to outfits and his hairstyle.

However, some Sheffield United fans would be forgiven for thinking that they had made a new January signing. Davies was pictured in training with the Blades without his trademark hair and instead sported a short buzz cut.

While some were questioning the change in style, Davies has already revealed the reason for it. He shaved his head in an effort to raise awareness of mental health and men’s suicide.

Taking to social media earlier this year, the 25-year-old said: "Well here it is, I’m raising money for @jamesplaceuk who help save lives of men in suicidal crisis, with free life saving treatment in there centres.

"Since opening in 2018, James’ Place has treated over 1,500 suicidal men, delivering over 7,500 therapy sessions providing hopefully futures to men that felt like they didn’t have them.

"The fundraiser is still going so if you can donate it will go a long way the link is in my bio! Thank you all again for the donations so far and let me know what you think of my new look for mental health!"

Davies signed for Sheffield United in the summer after failing to agree a new contract with boyhood club Everton. Speaking at the time, he said: 'I'm made up to be here and can't wait to get started.

“It was time for me to go from the previous club to join Sheffield United and I'm really excited for it, I think it is a great project that the team have here and I'm full of enthusiasm and hunger to get going.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world so when Sheffield United came knocking I thought this was the place to be, playing against the best teams and the best players.”

However, his early months at the club have been blighted by injury. He has made just three appearances and has not been seen since October.

Davies has recently returned to training and will be hopeful of playing a role in the Blades’ fight for survival. They were bottom of the table and eight points away from safety ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Ham.
