Briefly managing to stand on my surfboard I’m whooping with joy as a wave propels me towards the beach. Despite the surf only being 2ft high, the power of the sea feels incredible and gives me a surge of adrenaline as I shoot forward and fight to keep my balance. I’m enjoying a two-hour beginner’s lesson with George’s Surf School on Polzeath Beach in Cornwall.

Focusing on one-to-one coaching or taking out small private groups, chief instructor George Stoy has been teaching surfing and alpine sports for more than 20 years. At the start of the lesson George says: “The aim for today is to stand up for five seconds with style and to also do a major wipeout.”

The wipeout part was definitely easier than standing up, but with three instructors for our group of six there was always someone on hand to offer advice and encouragement, and our lesson was great fun (georgessurfschool.com, two-hour lesson £100, £30 for each supplementary person up to a maximum of six).
