Freddie Flintoff is tipped to make his return to the world of TV almost two years after being in a near fatal car accident on the BBC’s Top Gear.

The 46-year-old cricketing legend has been largely out of the public spotlight since he was involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022. The star was filming scenes for Top Gear when the open-topped three-wheel Morgan Super 3 car he was driving flipped over.

Freddie was airlifted to hospital following the incident and suffered serious injuries - including broken bones and injury to his face. Reports emerged to the suggest the star almost died in the accident and Top Gear was subsequently shelved by the BBC with Freddie receiving a reported £9 million settlement from the corporation.

Freddie was out of the spotlight until September last year when he reemerged at a cricketing event - and was still visibly recovering from his injuries. Now TV reports have stated that the star will soon be back on screens to continue filming his critically acclaimed cricketing documentary series, Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams - with hopes it will air before the end of the year.

The first season was released back in July 2022 and the long-awaited second season has been delayed by the star’s brutal injuries. Now it is reported Freddie has been meeting with production teams to get the cameras rolling.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Freddie and staff have been quietly working on it since last month. It’s a show he feels passionate about and he’s excited to be returning to the grass roots of the sport.

“It will be his first major TV project in two years. Filming will start in a few months, when it’s warmer outside, and will take place in the north of England. A lot of the same production team will be involved in this series so Freddie will feel comfortable ahead of his big telly return."

The second season of the show was announced way back in October 2022 and it is expected the show will recommence filming this spring. Clare Sillery, Head of Commissioning of Documentaries at the BBC was thrilled to announce the show had been renewed after fans fell for the first season.

She said at the time: “‘Transformative’ is a word that’s probably overused in relation to TV shows but in his Field of Dreams series, Freddie Flintoff genuinely changed the lives of some of the boys from Preston he drafted on to the cricket team. The warmth and authenticity of the series made it a big hit with viewers, and I’m delighted that he is ready to take on the challenge of a second series and can’t wait to see how it unfolds.”

While the official BBC Sports Instagram page shared excitement at the time, writing: “Series 2 of Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams CONFIRMED! We can't wait for this! A new four-part follow-up to series 1 has been commissioned and will come to BBC One and BBC iPlayer next year.” An exact air date for the now long-awaited second season has not yet been revealed.
