Alison Steadman has revealed the hilarious encounter she had with Paul McCartney and John Lennon before the Beatles became the biggest band ever.

The 77-year-old Gavin and Stacey star has enjoyed a long acting career, stretching back to Liverpool in the 1960s, where she rubbed shoulders with future stars of TV and the pop world before they were famous.

Alison has now recalled her meeting with John and Paul and how she cornered them in a post office after she had begun watching the band, ignoring the orders of her mum.

The Beatles had begun playing lunchtime sessions at The Cavern in the city and Alison's mother had warned that "there'll be trouble," as more people started packing the club to see the up-and-coming band. Alison said that she would sneak out from her home and say to her mother, "We’re just going shopping, Mum."

"And he wrote 'Beatles', in brackets, underneath. And he said, 'I thought I’d better put that, because in the future someone’s going to look at that and say, ‘Who the bloody hell’s Paul?’" Alison then added: "And then, of course, when the Beatles became famous, Mum said, 'You did go there, didn’t you? What was it like?'"

Fast forward to the end of last year and Alison has shared the heartbreak she felt when Gavin and Stacey came to an end and when everyone filmed their final scene of the beloved comedy. Alison played matriarch Pamela Shipman. and she said about the final moments: "I have to say it is the only show I have ever worked on where when we finished each character’s final scenes like, ‘That’s a wrap for Alison Steadman’.

“Everyone used to put their heads down and cry as we were so sad it was over. It was such a good experience for everyone. I think the magic of the series was that everyone loved each other and the audience loves that.”
