Wrexham co-owner and Hollywood star Rob McElhenney could not watch his beloved Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL playoffs as he attended the Emmy Awards on Monday night.

Back in November 2020, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds joined forces with McElhenney - famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ - to purchase Wrexham AFC amid plenty of fanfare. The duo have helped elevate the local community via popular Disney+ documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which has helped to raise the Dragons’ profile in the United States.

The move worked, with McElhenney and wife Kaitlin Olson attending the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. McElhenney was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program for the docuseries.

With the Eagles on the road facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs, McElhenney was pictured watching a pre-game show by Olson. McElhenney took to social media to repost the image along with the caption: “Who schedules the Emmys the same night as the @eagles #gobirds #FlyEaglesFly.”

McElhenney later posted a pic of himself with Olson and the award, along with the caption: “Worth it I guess Up the town #gobirds #FlyEaglesFly.”

Perhaps it was fortunate that McElhenney and his Eagles supporting family could not watch the full game. After reaching the Super Bowl last season, Philadelphia were crushed 32-9 by the dominant Buccanners, ending their postseason run at the first hurdle.

Earlier this month, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ won five categories at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Awards: Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera) and Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program.

The flurry of awards have come at a crucial time in the 2023/24 season. Wrexham are currently second in League Two, two points off leaders Stockport while the Red Dragons possess a game in hand.

Wrexham also recently secured their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by defeating League One outfit Shrewsbury Town in a cross-border derby at The Croud Meadow. Tom O'Connor scored the only goal in the victory to send the Dragons to the fourth round for a second season in a row.

McElhenney’s club have since drawn Blackburn Rovers, who are 18th in the Championship. Blackburn crushed Cambridge United 5-2 in their third round tie, winning courtesy of Sam Szmodics' hat-trick alongside second-half strikes from Arnor Sigurdsson and Harry Leonard.

The fourth round will be the first competitive meeting between the sides since the 1981-82 campaign. Competing in the old second division, a goalless draw at Ewood Park came before Wrexham clinched a 1-0 win at The Racecourse with Dennis Leman the' scorer.

All fourth-round ties are scheduled to be played over the weekend of Friday 26th January, with Wrexham travelling to Ewood Park on Monday 29th January. Those who advance to the fifth round will land £120,000 from the competition prize fund.
