Paris Saint-Germain are expected to free up £200million in the club's budget if Kylian Mbappe leaves this summer.

PSG are struggling to persuade Mbappe, 25, to sign a new contract. The France international's existing deal expires in June and Real Madrid are leading the race for his signature. English clubs, including Liverpool, will try to lure him to the Premier League.

Mbappe is undoubtedly one of the best footballers on the planet. The World Cup winner finished third behind winner Lionel Messi and runner-up Erling Haaland in The Best FIFA Men's Player 2023 vote on Monday night, and has scored 26 goals in just 25 games for PSG this term.

PSG would love to keep hold of Mbappe, but they are looking positively at his situation. PSG chiefs are trying to build a younger squad - without superstar names - under boss Luis Enrique, having got rid of Messi and Neymar last summer, and releasing Mbappe, it's understood, would free up a figure in the region of £200m in their budget.

The French giants have dreamed of winning the Champions League since Qatar Sports Investments bought them in 2011 to make the club one of the richest in the world. PSG have dominated domestically since that takeover - winning nine of the last 11 Ligue 1 titles, six French Cups, six French League Cups (competition defunct since 2020) and 10 French Super Cups. Yet they haven't managed to become champions of Europe.

PSG, who lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final, have spent a fortune on superstars. The likes of Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria were signed in the years following the Qatari takeover.

The global transfer market became significantly inflated when PSG spent £200million to sign Neymar from Barcelona in 2017. That smashed the previous world record transfer fee of £89m, set when Paul Pogba re-joined Manchester United from Juventus in 2016.

PSG also spent a fortune that summer to sign Mbappe, initially on loan from Monaco, for £165m. Last season, their first-team squad included some of the biggest names in world football - such as Messi, Marco Verratti, Sergio Ramos and Neymar.

But PSG are no longer interested in building a team of individuals, with all four of those players leaving the French capital last year. Mbappe could be the next superstar to leave, as he's now allowed to enter pre-contract negotiations with overseas clubs.

Madrid, who were close to signing Mbappe in 2022 before he agreed a new contract at PSG, are the favourites for his signature. Yet Mbappe has always held a soft spot for Liverpool and Merseyside is his most likely destination if he choses the Premier League.

Mbappe has previously spoken to Liverpool about a possible transfer and described them as "the favourite club of my mum" in an interview with the Daily Telegraph two years ago. He added: "My mum loves Liverpool... it's a big club."
