Sir Elton John screamed and whooped with joy after he became an EGOT winner - meaning he has now bagged an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony adding to his record breaking illustrious career.

The British music icon had to be woken at his Windsor home with a FaceTime call by husband David Furnish from the awards in Los Angeles.

Elton yelled "yes" to David in bed and expressed his humility at winning one of the biggest honours in showbiz. Elton's 2022 Dodger Stadium special won outstanding variety special at Monday night's TV awards show.

And despite retiring from touring David teased that Elton is looking at a musical project featuring his own career hits.

However the star could not travel to the downtown LA ceremony as he is recovering from knee replacement treatment. Delighted David, grinning while holding the Emmy backstage, explained the moment of joy to wake up the star during his sleep at around 3am UK time.

"He's had his left knee replaced, which isn't surprising if you think of the number of pianos he's jumped off of the platforms."

Elton retired last year from touring as the then highest grossing act of all time - before being beaten by Taylor Swift. However while many thought he was slowing down, David teased that he is considering a musical of his own hits.

Seemingly put off guard by the question concerning "rumours of an Elton Musical with his songs?", David smiled: "We're looking at a series of different musical projects. We're sort of, I would say we're evaluating our options, but there's certainly more to come at some point. I'll leave it at that. "

David admitted that the achievement of the honour was incredible.especially given the challenges of running a special gig with many crews.

"It was an amazing collaboration. Those three nights at Dodger Stadium. There was a lot going on. We had some of the most important shows in Elton's career to put on with special guests who he doesn't normally perform with.

"Then we were shooting a documentary at the same time, which was another crew in addition to our crew, and then we had the livestream crew.

"So there were three different crews working at the same time. But it was amazing the way that everybody clicked and everything came together and sort of staying out of people's ways. I managed to, it was a really joyful collaboration and everyone's very proud of the way it all turned out."

The Disney+ special focused on the musician's final North American show as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

The tour started in 2018 and earned close to a billion dollars. Before coming backstage, after the win announcement, stage producer Ben Winston accepted the award on his behalf flanked by David and the team.

"He's absolutely fine, but he wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award,

"We did know this was going to be historic because it was going to win a man who has created the soundtrack to all of our lives. He's done so much great for society, who is all of our heroes. We didn't know that it was going to win him an EGOT."

Eltpn's PR issued a statement too following the win. It read: "I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight," John said in an emailed statement. "The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world.

"Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives," he added. "Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful."

Elton is the 19th person to bag an EGOT including stars like John Legend and Jennifer Hudson.

Elton has two Oscars both for the Best Original Song category. The first was "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King in 1994 and then "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman in 2019.

He has earned five Grammys throughout his six decades-long career and in 2000 won a Tony Award for Best Original Score for the show Aida.
