Jose Mourinho was booed at the San Siro ahead of Roma's 3-1 defeat to AC Milan.

Mourinho's Roma suffered another disappointing result on Sunday to leave them ninth in Serie A. Leandro Paredes scored from the penalty spot for the visitors, but goals from Yacine Adli, Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez ensured the points stayed in Milan.

The result heaps further pressure on Mourinho's shoulders. The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United manager is struggling to get a tune out of Roma this season, as bitter rivals Lazio dumped them out of the Coppa Italia in midweek. Mourinho's contract expires in June and is expected to leave the Italian capital between now and then.

Mourinho wasn't in the dugout for Sunday's game after receiving a red card in each of Roma's last two games to receive a touchline ban. Yet he was still booed when he appeared on the big screen at the San Siro, as he watched on from the stands.

Mourinho was given a tough time by Milan fans due to his links with their local rivals Inter Milan. The Portuguese coach won five trophies during his two seasons in charge of Inter, including a famous Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble in 2010.

Mourinho still remains popular among Roma fans, having led them to victory in the Europa Conference League in 2022. That was the club's first ever European trophy. They almost won another last season, losing on penalties to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

Yet Roma fans will be aware Mourinho's time at the club is nearly up. Forward Andrea Belotti has even admitted they've hit "rock bottom". He told DAZN: "It is clear that we are struggling, because when you come off certain defeats, you cannot be happy or relaxed. We lost the derby and there is a great deal of frustration at the way that went."

Belotti added: "Now we have some time to get sorted out physically and mentally, but also to try out some tactical movements on the training ground. We feel like we hit rock bottom right now, but it does mean the only way is up."

Roma's season has been hampered by the loss of key players. Tammy Abraham hasn't played since last term due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury - but could return next month - while Chris Smalling has been nursing his own knee injury since September.

Paulo Dybala was also absent for Sunday's loss at Milan, while Houssem Aouar and Evan Ndicka are playing in the Africa Cup of Nations for Algeria and the Ivory Coast respectively. Iranian forward Sardar Azmoun is also competing at the Asian Cup.
