Roy Keane has opened up on his past rows with Seamus Coleman after the Everton defender broke his club's all-time Premier League appearance record.

Coleman has been with Everton for 15 years, joining the club from Sligo Rovers a couple of months after his 20th birthday. The right-back, who now captains his club, is playing under his ninth permanent manager since moving to Merseyside.

He made his 355th Premier League appearance for the club on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes against Aston Villa. The 35-year-old wasn't able to celebrate with a win, but a goalless draw against Unai Emery's high-flying side still lifted Everton a point above the relegation places.

Keane, who won the last of his Ireland caps before Coleman won his first but encountered him while coaching the national side, was on punditry duty for Sky Sports on Sunday And when he was there, he shed some light on some past run-ins with Coleman.

"I had a few rows with Seamus, I know you'll find that hard to believe, in the Irish dressing room," Keane said. "But what I like about players is that, if I have a go at them, and tell them they should be doing something, Seamus had a go back at me once, he obviously regretted it, but I like that.

"I know the way people talk about characters and he's a great lad and so on, but that doesn't mean to say he's not a winner and he's not up for the challenge. You don't play at that level, with the injuries he's had, unless you're a fighter."

Coleman suffered a broken leg on international duty in 2017, missing almost a full year of football, but returned to pick up where he left off for club and country. Another long-term injury saw him miss the start of the current campaign, but he was back in December and has now made back-to-back starts for the first time since April.

Everton are embracing every point they can get after being handed a 10-point deduction earlier in the season. There have been reports of a possible second points penalty, with manager Sean Dyche asked about the matter after his team's latest draw.

“We are just waiting on the news,” Dyche said . “The last time the news came out of the blue as you know, it might do again, we have to wait and see. You don’t know until you know. I’ll explain further if and when the news comes through.”

Dyche's team will return to action on Wednesday, with an FA Cup third round replay against Crystal Palace. The initial game ended goalless, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin sent off, but the Everton striker will be available after his suspension was overturned.
