Actress Emma Rigby is set to make an explosive return to the channel 4 soap following a glittering career in Hollywood.

Emma, 34, became a fan favourite during her five year stint playing Hannah Ashworth but quit the soap in 2010 and went on to launch a career in across the pond. But now, Emma is set to reprise her role and according to reports, she has now signed a year-long contract with soap bosses.

A source said: "Emma agreed to return for a little guest stint but after a few weeks of filming she felt like she was back home. She had a number of conversations with bosses and has since signed a year long contract."

The Sun reports that the cast are said to be "over the moon" to have her back on the popular show and bosses are also said to be "excited" at having her back as a regular cast member. The soap is currently undergoing a huge shake-up after three of its top bosses were axed in August last year.

Hannah Cheers, who was involved on the show for ten years under Bryan Kirkwood before jumping ship to the ITV soap Emmerdale, was brought back by bosses at the production company, Lime Pictures. As part of the overhaul, Hannah reportedly ripped up "boring" storylines and got the writers to re-do scripts and has played an integral role in one of the biggest stunts in the history of the soap.

It has also been said that Hannah contacted a number of show legends to return for the stunt. During next week's episodes, viewers will see the start of the soap's overhaul under Hannah.

The source told the publication: "There’s a real buzz around set, it’s a really exciting time for the soap and once the stunt airs there will be repercussions for some of its biggest and most-loved characters.” Viewers will see Hannah Ashworth return later this month with her mum Suzanne, and the twins she had with Darren Osborne.

Last week, it was also revealed that actor Charlie Clapham will return as Freddie Roscoe, later this year. Emma has appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters including The Counsellor alongside Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz. She was also in TV shows such as Prisoners Wives, Fresh Meat and Ripper Street.

Her last movie role was in The Power and her last television series was in Make Me Famous. She previously spoke of the difficulty of getting other roles after leaving Hollyoaks. The star said: "When I left Hollyoaks I could barely get any interviews for months. Casting directors wouldn’t let me in the door. "

She added: "They would just see ‘Hollyoaks’ and say no. So when I came to America, it was incredibly liberating to be given the chance to prove what I could do, and that I could transform for roles." She added that she had to "sacrifice" many relationships and friendships to focus on her career.
