A YouTuber has dubbed an Essex town as the worst place to live in the entire county.

The channel 'Turdtowns', which explores some of the UK's most overlooked towns, ranked Tilbury at the top of its list of the worst places in Essex. Tilbury topped the list of seven. The other towns named, from worst to best, were Jaywick, Basildon, Harlow, Clacton, Grays and Southend. The video described Tilbury as a "depressing" place with "an air of violence".

The YouTuber said: "The whole town feels unwelcoming and has an air of violence to it, like something out of the wild west. I'd love to see the cast of The Only ways Essex walk down the street here - they might struggle to manage that though, as the street is filled with potholes."

He added: "Here you cannot even find one pub because every time one opens, it closes after getting raided for drugs. You won't find a proper shop here either, and the skyline is instead dominated by the giant Amazon factory, perhaps a sign of modern times."

He concluded: "It's not enough that it's one of the ugliest places I've ever visited, it also has the second worst crime rate in the county, with 127 in 1000. It's probably quite handy for importing and exporting stolen goods though."

Tilbury, known as a bustling town next to the busy Port of Tilbury - London's main port - exists largely due to the port and the businesses that it brings. It's not just about industry though, it's also home to Tilbury Fort, built by Henry VIII - it's been praised as potentially the best example of a 17th-century artillery fortress in our isles.

Homes in Tilbury had a middle-of-the-road average price of £290,525 over the last year. Terrace houses there changed hands for around £314,705, meanwhile flats fetched about £173,998. In general, the prices in Tilbury were pretty steady compared to the previous year and about 10% more than the highest point of 2021 which was £263,686.

Despite not being one of the richest spots in Britain, Tilbury is among 101 UK towns set for a new 'Town Deal', which could see up to £25 million pumped into the area for improvements. However, it didn't manage to win any points with Turdtowns who concluded his video by saying: "Between the stink of the Thames, the billowing factories, the miserable souls that are trapped here and the most unsafe-feeling place I've ever visited, Tilbury takes the cake. A really intimidating and miserable place. I'd rather be in Jaywick, and that's saying something."
