Paul Mullin apologised to James McClean during Wrexham win over AFC Wimbledon

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin apologised to winger James McClean during the team's 2-0 win against Wimbledon for initially missing his first chance before scoring a goal in the 69th minute.

During the first half, Wimbledon troubled Wrexham with large amounts of possession but failed to make any of it count. They were punished by Steven Fletcher in the second 45, who scored a powerful volley from a corner taken by McClean.

McClean then provided the cross that eventually led to Mullin's goal and a win for Wrexham. The ball was initially missed by the striker and deflected on by defender Jack Currie. It fortunately fell back at Mullin's feet, allowing him to neatly place the ball into the lower right corner.

After the game, McClean couldn't help but poke fun at Mullin for costing him an assist for missing his initial cross. "Yeah, he apologised, and rightly so, for not scoring the first one and giving me an assist," said McClean. "It helps as a wide player being able to put the ball in the box and to have that quality in the box."

The goal elevated Mullins in Wrexham's all-time goal-scoring list, propelling him to the 11th with 91 goals, including 74 in the league. The win moved Wrexham into second in League Two as they look to achieved back-to-back promotions.

Wrexham remain two points behind League Two leaders Stockport County, who also secured a win against Walsall on Saturday. Their next clash is agains Newport on January 20.

The club, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McEllhenny, broke several records alongside the win. The 12,478 fans in attendance was Wrexham's most significant home crowd since January 2002 against Everton, when the club lost 3-0. It was also their biggest league attendance since January 1980, when the club lost a 1-0 home game against Shrewsbury.

Under the new ownership regime, Wrexham has secured victories in the last eight home league matches, marking the 11th-best run in the club's history. Notably, the team also won the first three games of the year last season, further signaling the importance of Reynolds. Going further back, the previous instance of winning their first three games of the year occurred in 1988.
