A man has been rushed to the hospital after his legs became stuck between two shipping containers at the Port of Liverpool.

The emergency services were called to Peel Ports at around midday today. The man, who was discovered by rescue teams conscious and breathing, was released using hydraulic equipment and airbags and is now receiving emergency medical treatment.

It has not yet been confirmed how he came to be in the position in which he was discovered. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service said: "Fire crews are in attendance at an incident at Seaforth Container Base, Port of Liverpool this afternoon.

"Two fire engines and the Search and Rescue Team are in attendance. Crews were alerted at 12.00pm and on scene at 12.06pm.

"Crews arrived to find a person trapped by the legs between two containers, with the casualty conscious and breathing. After a meeting between Fire Service, North West Ambulance, Port Police and Port Staff, a plan was agreed to remove the casualty using hydraulic equipment and airbags. The casualty was successfully released and is now in the care of North West Ambulance Service and receiving medical treatment."

A statement from Peel Ports and shared by the Liverpool Echo said: "We are aware of an incident onboard a vessel currently berthed at the Port of Liverpool, details are yet unknown. We are working with the emergency services and our priority at this time is ensuring crew safety. We will provide an update when appropriate to do so."
