Man raped near war memorial in city centre as suspect stole jewellery and fled
Police have launched an urgent investigation after a man was reportedly raped near a city centre war memorial.
St John's Gardens in Liverpool was closed on Saturday morning after the man in his 30s was attacked by another male at around 4:30am.
The victim was said to be wearing a piece of jewellery which was taken from him during the incident, before the suspect ran towards Lime Street railway station.
Emergency services attended the scene, with video footage showing the area still cordoned off to the public later in the day as police inquiries continued. Anyone with any information on the incident has been asked to come forward, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Merseyside Police Chief Inspector Dave Currie said: “We are in the very early stages of investigating this incident and officers remain in the area to carry out initial enquiries.

“I understand incidents of this nature will cause concern, but please be reassured that we take all reports of rape and sexual assault extremely seriously and we are determined to find the person responsible.
Police have cordoned off the area in the city centre (Liverpool Echo)“If you have any information about this incident, or you were driving past the area at the time and have dashcam footage showing anything suspicious, please get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
He added: “Rape is an unimaginably awful crime that we hope no one has to go through, but if you or someone you know has experienced rape or sexual assault, please have the confidence to speak to us and report it. We will listen carefully and do everything we can to bring such offenders to justice.
