Corrie spoilers next week - double return, surprise diagnosis and exit 'sealed'

Coronation Street is pulling out all the stops next week on the iconic cobbles.

Spoilers have revealed that the hit ITV soap is lining up two explosive returns, which are sure to cause a reaction in Weatherfield. Elsewhere, one family are left stunned as Joseph Brown receives a shock health diagnosis after weeks of feeling unwell. Also on the cobbles, one character's temporary exit is teased as they look to leave Weatherfield for Italy. Here are the biggest moments ahead on Corrie next week...

Double return next week ahead of sad death

Coronation Street airs two big returns to the show next week, leaving residents surprised on the ITV soap. New spoilers for next week confirm one family sees the comeback of two relatives, including one who was last seen two years ago.

Linda, the grandmother of Joseph Brown, makes her arrival known as she clashes with Joseph's stepmother Gemma Winter. But there's some good news for Gemma by the end of the week, as her mother Bernie Winter rejoins the show, after her own recent departure. Just weeks after fears she had left for good, Bernie returns ahead of a sad death on the show.

Last month, Bernie was sentenced to three months in prison for handling stolen goods. Bernie had been shifting the stolen goods in a bid to help raise some money for her son Paul Foreman, who is dying from motor neurone disease (MND).

Bernie had wanted to plead not guilty but, due to police having photographic evidence, she was advised to instead plead guilty. It resulted in her being sentenced to three months in prison and missing her son Paul's last Christmas. It's believed Paul will die in sad scenes this year. Joining Bernie back on the show is Linda, and we wouldn't be surprised if the two women clashed.

Linda arrives at a time when there is continued concern for Joseph's health as he complains of sickness. Gemma has been told she cannot live at home with him and her and Chesney's children, after being deemed a risk after a possible poisoning incident.

Shock Joseph health diagnosis

Coronation Street airs heartbreaking scenes for one family next week, after a diagnosis reveals what's really wrong with Joseph.

The youngster was left poorly recently, complaining of a headache and sickness. Initially Gemma was concerned for her stepson, but after a dash to A&E she was accused of wasting the staff's time. After days of concern from Gemma, while Joseph did insist he wasn't well, Chesney slammed his partner after it was suggested by doctors that Gemma might be experiencing anxiety, after her brother Paul's motor neurone disease diagnosis.

But there was further heartache when Gemma was accused of poisoning Joseph with lavender oil while he was unwell, with fears she was a risk to her children amid her apparently odd behaviour. Despite Gemma knowing something wasn't right with Joseph, it seemed as though she was the issue and she was told she had to move out of the family home, or the children could be taken into care.

But next week it's finally revealed what is wrong with Joseph, and Gemma's fears are finally confirmed. When Jospeh once again complains of sickness, his father Chesney is adamant he's fine as Gemma shares her concern. Gemma ends up sharing her worries with Dr Gaddas as a furious Chesney overhears, leading to returning character Linda, Joseph's grandmother, sharing her own concerns. As she encourages Chesney to speak to a family lawyer, she tells Gemma she doesn’t think she’s safe to be around her own children.

But events take a turn when Joseph continues to feel unwell, and he suddenly collapses on the sofa as his legs give way. He's barely conscious, leading to another hospital dash and soon a diagnosis is revealed. The doctor approaches and explains that after talking to Dr Gaddas, they suspect Joseph has Lyme disease which he contracted whilst camping. The NHS website defines Lyme disease as: "A bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks."

At last, Gemma's concern is revealed to have been necessary, as Chesney realises his son has been sick the entire time. In a heartbreaking twist, the family comes to terms with Joseph's ill health only for him to make a devastating admission. As Gemma tells Chesney and Joseph that social services have confirmed she can move back home, Joseph announces that he wants to live with Gemma and not him because she’s the only one who believed he was ill.

Exit storyline revealed as one character looks to leave cobbles

Coronation Street has revealed one character's exit storyline next week as a Weatherfield resident looks to leave the cobbles. In upcoming scenes, Cassandra "Cassie" Plummer calls in the shop and tells her mother Evelyn Plummer that she’s donated Terry’s money to a dog charity and that she only attacked him to stop him from hurting the dogs.

Also in the shop, Tyrone Dobbs tells Evelyn that his wife Fiz is attending a course in Italy and has invited him to go with her, but he wouldn’t dare leave the girls with Cassie for a fortnight. Later in the week, Cassie applies nail extensions to Ruby’s nails and gives her crisps for breakfast.

Having taken a call from the school, Evelyn tears a strip off Cassie and tells her she’s nothing but a hindrance when it comes to the girls. Does this mean that Tyrone does join Fiz in Italy? It was revealed last year that Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone, would be taking a break from Corrie after having a major knee operation.

The actor, 41, who was also forced to pull out of I'm a Celebrity, revealed back in November that he had reconstructive surgery on his ACL ligament, which had gone "really well". Posting a picture of his strapped-up limb on Instagram at the time, he wrote: "On Friday I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery. I have been told the surgery went really well. I know I have a long 9-12 months of rehabilitation ahead of me but I’m sure with the support of family and friends I’ll get there."

At the time, a Coronation Street spokeswoman said Tyrone would remain on screen for the rest of the 2023 year but will then disappear for a bit. She explained: "Alan will be on screen in the coming weeks as we film two months ahead, and then he'll be taking a short break whilst he recovers." With Alan's character Tyrone appearing to head to Italy next week, it's likely this is the character's temporary exit storyline from the hit ITV soap.
