Padam Padam scored Kylie Minogue her first top 10 single in 12 years back in May, but the track wasn't always destined for the Princess of Pop.

It's been revealed that Rita Ora was in the running to provide the vocals for that turned out to be last summer's anthem, but the song's producer fought to give Australian icon Kylie the track.

Speaking in a new interview, Lostboy, who worked with Norwegian songwriter Ina Wroldsen on the song, admitted there was "a moment when Rita was going to cut" Padam Padam amid uncertainty regarding Kylie's suitability for the record.

"We wrote Padam in February 2022 and there were maybe four or five months of us sitting on it, then I sent it to their label, and someone suggested to me, 'Kylie would kill this'," the producer explains.

"They were unsure and there was a moment when Rita was going to cut it and it was worming around a few artists on that label," Lostboy adds to The Sun. "They were trying to make it work but they didn’t think it was for Kylie. I was surprised at how confident she was that she could make it, that it would fit for her. But I think of her as someone who is so good at reinventing. It feels modern, but it also feels like Kylie."

Padam Padam, considered by the LGBTQ+ to be a gay anthem, became Kylie's 35th UK Top 10 hit after it peaked at Number Eight on the UK Top 40 chart in May and developed into a pop culture moment, with Padam even being used catch-all phrase by many.

"It’s taken on a life of its own," Kylie admitted in June when discussing the song - the first single release from her 16th studio album, Tension - and its success. "I am having the time of my life seeing what people are doing, people are hilarious. It’s become a noun, a verb, an adjective."

In September, as many called for Padam to officially added to the dictionary, Kylie finally revealed what the word actually means. "It really is amazing, it's just exploded across the world and there are now calls for it to be added to the dictionary. What would you like to see the definition be?" Natalie Barr asked the former Neighbours actress on Aussie show Sunrise.

"No one knows what it means," Kylie quipped, before adding: "I think its beauty is it means 'whatever'."
