Former The Great British Bake Off contestant Laura Adlington has revealed she has quit baking after being brutally trolled online.

The 33-year-old was a contestant on the Channel 4 show back in 2020 where she baked her way to the final before she was pipped to the post by 23-ear-old Peter Sawkins.

During her time on the show, Laura sparked amazement for her daring baking feats - but she unfortunately also drew vicious comments and cruel taunts from online trolls.

The digital manager from Kent, who is a size 26 and is something of a body positivity activist, was bullied into giving up her favourite hobby as the brutal comments took their toll on her.

Laura has said that while being on Bake Off changed her life for the better, it also took a lot of joy out of her life. She is currently promoting her new book, title Diet Starts Monday, and was a guest on ITV’s Lorraine on Thursday. During her chat on the early morning show, Laura revealed that she has quit baking.

Asked by 64-year-old host Lorraine Kelly if she still avidly bakes, Laura glumly replied: "The show completely changed my life, but not really. I must admit I lost my love for it after Bake Off because I got trolled really badly and people were saying I was rubbish, and I shouldn’t have got through to the final."

Lorraine responded, saying: "People are ghastly, and you know they would never say that to your face... ignore them and keep making cakes." During their chat, Laura explained why she had declined the chance of having a gastric band. She told Lorraine: “I realised it wasn’t right for me because it wasn’t going to address the emotional reasons why I eat so I didn’t go ahead with it for that reason.”

Laura has been promoting her book via social media - and proudly posed with a copy on her Instagram. In an accompanying message, she wrote: “After pouring my heart and soul into Diet Starts Monday for the best part of a year, it’s finally out in the world. I can’t put into words the absolute whirlwind of emotions I’ve felt today. But just know how grateful I am for your support. I realise I would never have been given opportunities like this without you, so thank you.”

The memoir is described by the author as: “a no-BS guide to body acceptance in a looks-obsessed world… By undoing negative ingrained beliefs about beauty and value, and focusing on building inner confidence, Diet Starts Monday will empower you to live a fun and full life – whatever your size.”
