A new crime series has premiered on streaming platforms that is available to stream absolutely free. Peter Capaldi stars in Criminal Record, a new British police series that launched on Wednesday (January 10) and already has fans “hooked.”

The Doctor Who actor stars opposite The Good Wife’s Cush Jumbo in the series that is billed as a “powerful, character-driven drama” set in the heart of contemporary London. From BAFTA-nominated Indian Summers creator Paul Rutman, the Apple Original series touches on issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain.

Criminal Record launched exclusively on Apple TV+, which means it is only available to stream with an Apple TV+ subscription which usually costs £8.99 a month. But by signing up today, members can watch the show without paying a penny thanks to Apple’s seven-day free trial.

Criminal Record kicks off as an anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives at opposite stages in their career into a tug of war over an old, high-profile murder case. Capaldi stars as a grizzled man determined to protect his legacy opposite Jumbo as a young woman in the early stages of her career.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Capaldi described the series as “a stylish crime drama with a contemporary edge and a noir-ish element”. The Scottish actor – also known for his acclaimed portrayal of foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It – revealed what attracted him to playing a veteran cop in Apple’s latest blockbuster series.

“I liked the idea of a character who is veiled,” he said. “I always feel as if I’m giving too much away, so a character who deliberately hides everything was very attractive.

“He has a knocked-about, been-around-the-block quality, a certain melancholy. He’s like London, where the series is set – he’s been through his own personal Blitz. He has scars and carries ghosts.”

Criminal Record has received glowing reviews from critics and general audiences, with many singling out the “outstanding” performance of Capaldi and his co-lead. The series debuted with a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and while this has dipped slightly since its premiere, it now also holds a 90 percent audience score.
