The Derby della Capitale between Lazio and Roma descended into chaos on Wednesday - as three players were sent off.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho was also shown his marching orders, as Lazio won 1-0 to knock their bitter rivals out of the Coppa Italia. The only goal came in the 51st minute after a penalty was awarded following a VAR review, which Mattia Zaccagni converted.

Lazio winger Pedro, who once played for Roma, was the first person to be sent off at the Stadio Olimpico after receiving a second yellow card in the 96th minute. Roma's Sardar Azmoun was the next player to be dismissed after clipping Lazio's Nicolo Rovella.

Roma's Gianluca Mancini was then sent off after the full-time whistle, while his team-mate Edoardo Bove was hit on the back with a bottle of beer while he was being substituted. The Derby della Capitale is regarded as one of the fiercest in European football.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has now been sent off twice in four days, having also been dismissed in Roma's 1-1 home draw against Atalanta last Sunday. The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss has been dismissed six times in the last two seasons.

"It's always painful to lose, doubly so in the derby," Mourinho told Mediaset. "It's a modern football penalty, the sort that wouldn't have been given before VAR. The referee didn't give it when he was three metres away but with VAR he then gives it."

Wednesday's result places further pressure on Mourinho's shoulders. His contract at Roma expires in June and his team aren't enjoying the best of campaigns, as they sit eighth in Serie A. Yet they are still only four points behind Fiorentina in fourth.

Roma have also reached the play-off round of the Europa League after finishing second in their group, two points behind Czech side Slavia Prague. They will take on Dutch side Feyenoord, who they defeated in the Europa Conference League final two years ago.

That was Roma's first ever major European triumph, which was achieved during Mourinho's first season in charge. He almost repeated the feat last term, as Roma reached the Europa League final. They suffered an agonising penalty shootout loss to Sevilla.

Regardless of what happens this season, Mourinho is likely to leave Roma at some point in 2024. The two-time Champions League winner has already rejected a lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabia and is likely to have plenty of offers when he becomes available.

As for Lazio, they will face the winners of Frosinone's clash against Juventus in a two-legged semi-final in April. The other last-four clash will see Atalanta take on Fiorentina. The Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico is pencilled in for May 15.
