A man who launched a vicious attack with a suspected pool ball inside a sock told a judge "thanks for ruining my life" when he was jailed.

Jonathon Wood, 50, was seen hitting his victim over the head after first pulling the sock from a front pocket, in footage shown at Derby Crown Court. The man, who refused to support any prosecution, walked away with blood seen to pour from a wound on his head.

After Wood said "thanks for ruining my life" when he was jailed for just over 18 months, Judge Martin Hurst responded “I think you will find it is you who has ruined your life”.

The judge stated: “You have an appalling record including carrying weapons and violence. This is the fourth time you have appeared before the court for either a bladed article or an offensive weapon.

"This took place at 10.30am, in bright sunshine, where members of the public were going about their daily business. Someone you knew was involved in some kind of confrontation with the complainant and you decided to get involved.

“You pulled out a sock, probably with a pool ball inside it, and struck him to the head causing a wound which bled profusely. There was some sort of history between you and him, you knew him and that’s why you had a weapon with you.”

Almas Ben-Aribia, prosecuting, said the incident happened outside a McDonald's in Chesterfield town centre at 10.30am on June 19, last year, reported Derbyshire Live. She played the CCTV which showed Wood pull out the sock with the heavy item inside it, smash it down on the head of the victim who then walked away shouting with blood pouring from his head.

The prosecutor said: “He waited until the first day of the trial to plead guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. The complainant has not provided a statement and was not cooperative with the police.”

Wood, of no fixed address, has 39 previous court appearances for 104 offences on his criminal record. Bianca Brasoveanu, mitigating, unsuccessfully attempted to have her client’s custodial sentence suspended. She said: “He has been on an electronically-monitored curfew since October, he and his partner are supporting each other to get off drugs, she has had two heart attacks and suffers blood clots.”
