Jude Bellingham was left wide-mouthed after TWICE tearing into Jamie Carragher’s 2023 Team of the Year.

The Liverpool icon was handed the task alongside CBS colleagues Kate Abdo, Micah Richards and Alex Scott to name his best performers of the past 12 months. They were split into two teams to make their selections.

Carragher was paired with Abdo, while Real Madrid star Bellingham joined in on the discussion via video link. The first sticking point for the England sensation came when Carragher selected his midfield trio.

Speaking about his first selection, the former defender said: “For me, this is the easiest choice I’ve had to make. I am going to pick a young superstar from England who has lit the Champions League alight this season. For me, it has to be only one man. I’m going to choose… Declan Rice.”

That statement caused Richards and Bellingham to descend into fits of laughter before the latter replied: “I’m liking the look of Micah’s team more and more…”

The ex-Man City man eventually selected the Real Madrid superstar in his side instead. The second problem that Bellingham had with Carragher’s side was with the attack.

He picked Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. In attempting to explain his selections, Carragher said: "Look at that front three. I mean, could you ever pick a better front three than that? You've got Mbappe. The best player in the world right now. You've got Messi, the GOAT."

Bellingham was not particularly convinced though. He interjected: "I don't think there's enough energy in there... a lot of walking,” before Richards also chimed in by claiming “there’s no legs”. Carragher was slightly taken aback and replied: “You don’t think there’s enough energy there?”

Despite those two problems, Carragher still had plenty of talented stars included in his side. AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was selected between the sticks in front of a defence that included Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kim Min-Jae, John Stones and Theo Hernandez.

Rice’s midfield partners included Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne and Bayern’s Jamal Musiala. The side was then rounded off with Messi, Kane and Mbappe.

Elsewhere, Richards and Scott rattled off a side that included Premier League stars Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, William Saliba, Mo Salah and Erling Haaland, as well as Giovani Di Lorenzo, Federico Dimarco, Bellingham, Rodri, Pedri and Vinicius Jr.

Bellingham will once again be aiming to prove his abilities with an upcoming double header against Real Madrid’s fierce rivals Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Supercup and the Copa del Rey.

Carragher and Abdo's full team: Maignan; Hernandez, Stones, Min-Jae, Alexander-Arnold; Rice, Musiala, De Bruyne; Mbappe, Kane, Messi.
