Legendary ITV host returns to screens after denying he was quitting show

A legendary daytime TV host who was forced to deny he was quitting the iconic show he has presented for 18 years is back on the telly.

Dickinson’s Real Deal returned to screens today for its 19th season – and far from retiring as had previously been reported, 82-year-old host David Dickinson has made it clear he has no intention of stopping work anytime soon.

Last year antiques expert David slammed claims he was set to leave the ITV show he has fronted since 2006, after shooting to fame on rival show Bargain Hunt on the BBC, which he presented from 2000 to 2004.

It comes after reports suggested he had quietly quit the show to spend more time with his actress wife, Lorne Lesley. An ‘insider’ had previously claimed it was an “open secret” he had called time on Dickinson’s Real Deal and would be leaving after filming the latest series. This Morning host Dan Hatfield was even rumoured to have been lined to replace him

But in a statement last year, a spokesperson for David told the Mirror: "David has no plans to retire from Dickinson’s Real Deal, a show he still very much enjoys making, and is hugely looking forward working on the upcoming series later this month."

David echoed this during an appearance on Loose Women - when he branded the retirement claims “fake news”. He said at the time: "Fake news as would say! Standing down? My agent said we know nothing about it, I know nothing about it. All I can tell you is, a week on Saturday we are filming series 19 and it's going fantastically well. Over a million, as I'm sure your show does very well too and is very popular."

It's not known whether the ITV show would ever continue without its namesake hosting, with the source admitting they are unsure what the channel's plans are for the future of the series prior to David's statement. An ITV spokesperson said: "The current series of Dickinson’s Real Deal is in production and filming throughout spring and summer. No decisions have been made on future series beyond that."

The speculation surrounding David's position on the ITV show comes after it was revealed to work with her daughter. Cheryl regularly appears alongside David on the ITV daytime show, where she parts with her cash to buy some of the public's best offerings of antique items they've found in their home.

However, Cheryl has confirmed she didn't have enough time to film the new series as she has been busy working alongside her Love Island daughter Zara Holland on their own company. The pair own fashion business Mimi Boutique, which they say has doubled since the pandemic. They have a boutique in Hessle, East Yorkshire and another in Beverley, East Yorkshire. They also sell online too with items coming from Italy, Paris and the UK.

Cheryl told "I did the show for 14 years. I was one of the originals but now mine and Zara's business is booming, unfortunately I don't have enough time to film the next series."
