'The sooner we get the chance to trump Rishi Sunak at the ballot box the better'

As we enter the second week of a General Election year, a desperate Rishi Sunak is running out of ways in which he might fight for survival.

Nothing this hopeless PM does is shifting the polls which, on current trends, predict a landslide Labour victory with Keir Starmer sitting on a 190-seat majority.

As a last resort Mr Sunak is now trying to spend his way out of trouble by splashing more on Facebook ads than Donald Trump did on his latest presidential bid.

To do that he has had to tear up campaign rules to nearly double allowable electoral spending to £35m. And he raised the threshold for declaring individual donations.

The Electoral Commission is concerned this lacks transparency. We should all be concerned at a tilt towards US politics, where the winner is often the one with the deepest pockets.

Mr Sunak is throwing money at his own failure to meet his pledges to reduce debt, grow the economy, cut NHS waiting lists and stop migrants crossing the Channel.

And even he must know his latest wheeze to be trotted out on the airwaves this morning – to admit the Tories are bad, but insist Labour will be worse – will not cut any ice with voters.

After 14 years of Tory misrule, the British people have had enough of shambolic and dishonest government by gimmick.

And the sooner they get the chance to trump Mr Sunak at the ballot box the better.

Time to deliver

Former sub-postmaster Tony Downey tells today how he was left bankrupt and feeling suicidal after he was wrongly accused of stealing £35,000 from the Post Office.

He was one of more than 11,000 sub-postmasters who gave the Post Office its reputation for friendly, dedicated community service.

A television drama series vividly brought to life how it was nothing of the sort. The Post Office viciously persecuted hundreds like Tony to cover up its own IT failings.

Police are now looking for the answer to the central question that ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office posed: If sub-postmasters did not take all that money, where did the cash so brutally squeezed from them end up?

As soon as it is found it must be paid back to the innocent whose lives were wrecked by the Post Office’s unforgivable actions.

And those responsible for one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British history must be brought to book.
