The First Lady appeared to have to lead her 81-year-old husband off stage while orienteering him back to his surroundings at his first campaign speech of 2024.

Octogenarian President Joe Biden appeared on video and seemed to be completely confused as to where he was after delivering a mandate to the people of the US to re-elect him to the Whitehouse hot-seat. The sitting president had concluded his speech when wife Jill Biden rushed up to the podium and took him by the hand.

The president, 81, had just finished speaking at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania, where George Washington organised an army to fight the British in 1777. As she approached her husband, she appeared to whisper something in his ear but smartly managed to avoid the view of television cameras that were recording what appeared to be a highly awkward moment.

His doctor wife intervened after the president had told the crowd: "I understand power! Thank you all so very much..." before the music drowned him out. She then attempted to lead her husband off the stage only to see her husband suddenly turn to the crowd and began speaking once again, talking over the exit music that was already playing over the loudspeakers. It was Biden's first public event since his holiday in the Caribbean.

It came days after a body language expert claimed Biden appeared “unsteady and confused” as he boarded Air Force One at the end of his vacation on the US Virgin Islands.

The president is now the oldest in US history to take office, when he began his stint in 2021 and this has sparked doubts, mainly amongst his right-wing opponents, that he is competent. He is facing growing calls for an investigation at the same time as his administration is rumoured to have deployed a 'Bubble Wrap' strategy to stop him from falling in public prior to the general election in November.

There is just 11 months to go before that poll and Biden has faced repeated questions over his fitness for office, with polls and pundits claiming it is a huge problem. Even some of his staffers believe he needs protecting, with a new strategy being set out to stop him falling or getting lost on stage the way he has numerous times during his tenure.

However, many sitting and even former administration officials vehemently disagree and called for him to hit the campaign trail to "show his vigour" and "boast about his age rather than ignore it". Democrat strategist Simon Rosenberg said Biden should hit home his age and experience even harder. He told Mail Online: "He's been successful because of his age, not in spite of it. We're all going to have to make that case because it's true. We can't run away from the age issue.

'It's going to be a major part of the conversation, but we would be making a political mistake if we don't contest it more aggressively." But John B. Judis, a long-time political strategist and author, suggested Biden's age has made him look less presidential, saying: "He doesn't look and speak the part. He's not a commanding or charming presence on a presidential or presidential election stage."

However, Mr Judis was full of praise for Biden's legislative achievements, including infrastructure and fighting climate change, but added that his "public performance" is overall, poor. He said: "I think a lot of voters, and young people in particular, who are not at all put off by his political positions or accomplishments, are put off by his utter failure as a regal persona.

"And I don't know how that can be fixed. Not by bicycling. Biden's best hope in that regard is the voters' perception of Trump as a bad or even evil father who wants to wreck the family." The consternation over Biden's age comes as polling has never been worse for the president.

During his speech, Biden said 'democracy is on the ballot' as states around the country launch bids to kick off Trump from the ticket. And Trump's biggest problem, it seems, is January 6. Biden warned America's voters that Trump is 'sick' and a 'loser' saying 'we nearly lost America' on January 6. Biden condemned the Republican frontrunner for his "lies" and for making his White House campaign about "himself". He said Trump invoked Nazi Germany when he referred to his enemies as "vermin" and compared him to a dictator who could destroy the US if re-elected.
