The Brothers Sun

Starring Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh as a gangster family matriarch, this action-dramedy has earned a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and has fans calling it Netflix’s “best show in a long time.” The Brothers Sun kicks off when the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin.

This forces his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) to head to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Yeoh), and his younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) – who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family. As deadly societies and a rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, the trio must heal their wounds and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all.

From American Horror Story co-creator Brad Falchuk and newcomer Byron Wu, this series comprises elements of an odd-couple buddy comedy, gritty action and a dash of romance.

Criminal Record

Peter Capaldi stars in this action-packed crime thriller as a grizzled detective with something to hide. In the Apple Original series, an anonymous phone call in the heart of London draws two brilliant detectives into a tug-of-war over an old murder case and a fight to correct a miscarriage of justice.

One (Cush Jumbo) is a young woman in the early stages of her career, while the other (Capaldi) is a well-connected and grizzled man determined to protect his legacy. From Indian Summers creator Indian Summers, the gripping series touches on issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain.

Echo

Marvel’s latest blockbuster series is one that even non-superhero fans can get on board with. Echo promises to be a gritty and action-packed drama unlike any previously seen in the comic book movie franchise.

It centres on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf Native American anti-hero whose past catches up with her in her Oklahoma hometown. The former leader of a violent gang, Maya finds herself pursued by the hulking Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) – AKA the Kingpin – and his criminal empire.

Echo marks the first series under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, which will focus on grounded, character-driven stories and not be reliant on audiences’ understanding of the wider franchise. It also marks the first Marvel Cinematic Universe project to be rated TV-MA in the US – meaning it is unsuitable for children under 17 – so viewers can expect some violent fight scenes.

True Detective: Night Country

The hit crime anthology series returns with a new series that has impressed critics and already earned a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Oscar-winner Jodie Foster and backed by a new showrunner, takes viewers to the deepest, darkest corner of harsh Alaska.

It kicks off as the long winter night falls in Ennis, when eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

The Artful Dodger

This darkly comedic new series follows the exploits of Jack Dawkins, the pickpocket knows as the Artful Dodger from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. Set in 1850s Australia, the series stars former Love Actually youngster Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack Dawkins – aka The Artful Dodger.

Jack is now working as a surgeon in the lively colony of Port Victory, but his past returns to haunt him with the arrival of Fagin (David Thewlis) and he is lured back into a world of crime. From heists to life-and-death surgeries, to the harsh realities of the criminal world mingling with the middle ground and gentry, the series is a tale of reinvention, betrayal, redemption, and love with a twist.

Click here to stream The Artful Dodger on Disney+ from January 17 from as little as £4.99.

Masters of the Air

Band of Brothers producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks reunite for this epic WWII drama. Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, Masters of the Air follows the real soldiers of the 100th Bomb Group – nicknamed the “Bloody Hundredth” – as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany.

The airmen grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich is at the heart of the series.

Some were shot down and captured, some were wounded or killed and some were lucky enough to make it home. With a stacked ensemble cast including Oscar-nominees Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan and Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa, this limited series depicts a unique and crucial time in world history.

Expats is set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, centring on a multifaceted group of three American women – Margaret, Hilary and Mercy – whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy.

The women are faced with a chain of life-altering events set off by a single encounter that leaves everyone navigating the intricate balance between blame and accountability. Expats interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred.
