Former Liverpool star Gary McAllister has urged the Reds to pull off a stunning transfer swoop for Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe, 25, has entered the final six months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, and it was reported earlier this week that the French superstar has already agreed to waive a £69million loyalty bonus if he leaves the club this summer. Having decided to remain at the Parc des Princes for the 2023-24 season, Mbappe will allegedly be owed 80 million euros for his services, even though PSG had expected him to sign a contract extension which would keep him in the French capital for next term as well.

Reports from Europe claim Liverpool are now the frontrunners to sign the France international, who captains his country. Ex-Reds midfielder McAllister, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup during his two-year stay at Anfield as a player, believes that his former employers should be in the mix for Mbappe.

"I think clubs like Liverpool should always be there when a world superstar like Kylian Mbappe becomes available," the Scot declared, speaking to Boyle Sports. "If there's an opportunity there, and if the Mbappe deal is in line with the budgets and how the club is run, then Liverpool should be interested as far as I'm concerned."

McAllister, who went on to be a coach at Liverpool, also reckons that the 25-year-old would suit Jurgen Klopp's front-footed attacking style and went on to say: "The world's top five or six clubs will always want to be involved when a player of that calibre becomes available, and Liverpool are a part of that group.

‌"Over the last few years, people have been saying that Mbappe's next step was Real Madrid, but the link with Liverpool has also been there. Liverpool were also in the picture when Jude Bellingham was available. I can't see a reason why they couldn't get Mbappe if the deal worked for them."

The Reds have indeed held talks with Mbappe previously, as the World Cup -winning forward told the Telegraph in 2022: "I talked to Liverpool because it's the favourite club of my mum. I don't know why, you will have to ask her! It's a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It's a big club."
