Netflix series hailed 'best show in a long time' earns staggering score

Netflix has dropped an original series that has earned a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and has fans calling it the streaming giant’s “best show in a long time.” The Brothers Sun is a brand-new action-packed series that blends black comedy and family drama.

Fronted by Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once actress Michelle Yeoh as a gangster family matriarch, the series boasts elements of an odd-couple buddy comedy, a hearty dose of gritty action and a dash of romance. The all-Asian cast channel their inner Keanu Reeves throughout the series in martial arts-filled fight scenes with help of fight coordinators from the first John Wick film.

The Brothers Sun kicks off when the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin. This forces his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) to head to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Yeoh), and his naïve younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) – who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.

As Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, Charles, Bruce and their mother must heal the wounds caused by their separation and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all. The Brothers Sun comes from newcomer Byron Wu and American Horror Story co-creator Brad Falchuk, who serves as showrunner.

Speaking to Netflix ahead of the show’s launch, Falchuk explained how the series explores “what it means to be a son, what it means to be a brother, and also what it means to try and keep a family together.”

“We do an extreme version of it because they’re a crime family and there are people shooting at them and trying to kill them,” he added. “But the conflicts they’re having – the problems they’re having internally, the emotional problems – are very, very universal.”

The series has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and has already earned Netflix its first 90 percent-plus Rotten Tomatoes score of 2024. Since it premiered on Thursday (January 4), The Brothers Sun has earned a near-perfect 97 percent audience score, with fans calling it the “best Netflix show in a long time”.
