Starsky & Hutch stars David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser had "ups and downs" together.

The actors played the leading roles in Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979. British-American actor and singer David played Detective Kenneth 'Hutch' Hutchinson while Paul was Detective Dave Starsky. The legendary detective duo became close friends away from screens, but their relationship didn't come without its hiccups.

David and Paul created a unique bond after working together on the TV series over five years that made them household names. Just last year Paul opened up on their relationship, admitted they were "still good friends". He admitted: “David and I had our ups and downs, but we had a great relationship.

He told Closer: "We really cared about each other, and we’re still good friends. I speak to him once every month or two. When I go to England, I see him. We also developed a great relationship with the whole crew. There was a tremendous sense of camaraderie.” Paul also told Page Six: "One thing David and I had and still have is a very deep friendship."

As David told The Sunday Post: "We knew each other before Starsky&Hutch and have been close friends all these years since." David gained his British citizenship in 2004 and reunited with Paul in the UK over the years. Back in 2017, the iconic duo attended Liverpool's Comic-Con where David told fans: "One thing that's great is that three of us have remained really good friends and that's very rare and I'm really grateful for that. It's very rare to find a relationship like what we had on that show that comes from the heart."

He also once discussed his love for the UK. In 2015, he said to MailOnline: "Britain is beautiful. I like south Devon a lot, the bleakness of Dartmoor. And I like being in a country steeped in history. I return to the States about three times a year as my five sons all live there, though my daughter lives here."

David lived in north London with his fifth wife Helen Snell, who he married in 2010. The actor married five times and has five sons and one daughter. He first tied the knot with Mirrirm 'Mim' Solberg in the early 60s, when they welcomed one child. They split after one year together. In 1968, he married Karen Carlson after they met on Here Come the Brides.

They also welcomed a child but split nine years later. While filming for Starsky & Hutch, he was in an open relationship with Lynne Marta. In 1980, he got married to Petti Carnel Sherman - who was the ex-wife of his Here Come the Bride's co-star Bobby Sherman. The marriage didn't last and, seven years later, he married Julia Nickson before going their separate ways.

A statement on Friday 5 January confirmed David had died aged 80. His wife Helen said: “David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”
