An active shooter slaughtered one and injured at least two others, striking fear into a school community as kids returned to class on the first day of the second semester.

Police swooped on the Perry High School in Iowa where initial reports suggest multiple people may have been wounded after a gunman opened fire. Reports also indicated that helicopters, including Lifeflights, were circling overhead, as many as three, ready to take the severely injured to the nearest trauma centres.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office confirmed that there was an active shooter investigation and later said the first call came in at 7:37am. The shooter was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Erica Jolliff said that her daughter, a ninth grader, reported getting rushed from the school grounds at 7:45am. Distraught, Jolliff was still looking for her son Amir, a sixth grader, one hour later.

"I just want to know that he's safe and OK," Jolliff said. "They won't tell me nothing."

First day back

Today was the first day of the school's second semester following winter break, with students returning across the Perry Community School District. But now the school is in lockdown following the reports of an active shooter.

An area encompassing several blocks surrounding the school has been barricaded with medical helicopters spotted landing at the school and in the air above. According to city spokesperson Chris Cohea, the nearby elementary school has also been locked down with students there being kept in their rooms.

Video footage from the scene shows a huge emergency services response, with a cordon in place and police and fire crews on scene. Others can be seen outside the cordon, watching the situation unfold as more information comes to light.

Witnesses have reported seeing students in tears reuniting with their parents near the entrance to the high school.
