The heroic moment a mum and toddler were rescued from flood water by a brave passer-by has been caught on camera.

The victim was plucked from her stranded car after becoming overwhelmed by a raging torrent on a suburban street in Birmingham on Tuesday.

She was stuck with her three-year-old toddler until fearless Liam Stych, 28, came to her aid. In the video he can be heard calmly telling her “Don't move stay there!” as he prepares to drag her from the driver's seat after already pulling her little girl to safety.

She was being kept safe by Liam's pregnant partner Tia Draper, 27, who was standing on the bridge. West Midlands Police hailed Liam a “local hero” but the modest dad-of-two insisted he just acted “on instinct”.

The footage, shot from a nearby neighbour's home security camera, shows Liam bravely pull the stricken woman to safety. He then helps her up the embankment where she runs to embrace her little daughter.

Neighbour Shami Uddin, 49, a restaurateur, who took the footage told The Mirror: “I heard a loud bang and went outside to see what was happening. I saw Mr Stych rescuing the baby, the water had so much force, it was a torrent about six or seven foot. The car was moving all over the place, I don't what she was thinking to be honest, but he was so brave.

“If he had slipped or something he would have been in real trouble because you don't swim against that current he was in real danger. He was proper selfless, I gave her a blanket and an unbrella but there was nothing for me to do he was a real action man."

The day before humble Liam said: He said: “Once the babbie was safe I ran to get the straps and climbed back to the car and smashed the back passenger window. I secured the car to the bridge with the ratchet straps so it wouldn’t drift any further under the bridge. I then told the woman to climb into the back and get out the window. She managed to get out and we then held hands and just jumped together into the water after a count of three.

“It was about 5ft deep but was really strong and I dragged her out of the water. The ambulance crew turned up and checked her and the child over. I think if I hadn’t done what I did the car would have been dragged under the bridge and there would have been no way of getting them out.”
