Former Coronation Street actor Chris Fountain has shared the sad news of his grandad's passing on Instagram. He posted a black and white photo of them together, captioning it: "Goodnight old pal."

Chris, 36, who played Tommy Duckworth in the soap, also added a broken heart emoji to his post. The pair were very close, often enjoying days out together, which Chris would share on his social media much to the delight of his followers.

In September, Chris and his Grandad had a lovely day out on the Northern Belle train. Chris shared a series of photos from their trip, writing: "Me and my best pal, my Grandad, had a chuffing lovely day out on the Northern Belle Train. Creating more priceless memories. My grandad has always been my best mate whom I cherish dearly and I absolutely love our trips away together."

The sad passing of his best friend and Grandad comes after Chris shared his fears of having 'another stroke' one year after he was rushed to hospital with a life-threatening blood clot following a seizure at home. He updated fans about his health 12 months after suffering a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) which led to heart surgery.

A 'mini-stroke' or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) happens when the brain's blood supply is temporarily disrupted, which can cause problems with movement and speech.

Chris knew something was critically wrong after he woke up unable to talk properly. The panicked celeb called for an ambulance from his London home. He shared a throwback snap of himself in the hospital, captioning it: "One year ago today. Life can change in an instant, I've had to make a lot of changes but things have gotten so much better' Be as positive as you can be, live life to the full and don't give up, no matter how tough things get," he shared.

Further expressing his feelings, he said: "It's kind of been a weird thing to wrap my head around. Part of me worries thinking "Am I going to have another one today". But then part of me feels super proud of my recovery. My speech is pretty much back to normal, I've run a marathon, I'm fit again."

It comes after Chris recently explained that being fired from the ITV soap over a dark toned rap music video left his mental health spiralling. The soap star built up an impressive career on the small screen - playing heartthrobs Justin Burton on Hollyoaks and Tommy Duckworth on Corrie.

However, his professional career was nuked in 2013 when footage emerged of him performing - while wearing a mask that covered his face - music under the stage name ‘The Phantom’ which included misogynistic rap lyrics and references to rape. The video sparked a backlash which ultimately led to Chris being sacked from Coronation Street - despite the star issuing a heartfelt apology and the footage dating from a year before his dismissal.

Speaking on Scott Thomas's Learning As I Go podcast, Chris explained that his mental health took a tumble in the aftermath of his sacking - which occurred with near immediate effect. He said: "That singular week in August 2013 just blew my entire life apart. All the foundations of what I'd built as a career just completely came crashing down. And it was the start of a real downward spiral in terms of my mental health, my confidence."
