The next instalment of True Detective is finally just days away. Almost 10 years to the day since it first graced our screens, the hit crime anthology series will return later this month for its fourth season with an all-new cast and showrunner.

Titled True Detective: Night Country, the upcoming series will see Oscar-winner Jodie Foster and boxer-actress Kali Reis star as a pair of detectives in cold, dark Alaska. The series centres on the disappearance of eight men who vanish without a trace while operating an Arctic research station and also stars Christopher Eccleston and Fiona Shaw.

Its official synopsis reads: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

This fourth season marks the first True Detective instalment without creator Nic Pizzolatto as showrunner or writer, who instead serves as executive producer. Mexican filmmaker Issa López has taken the reins as showrunner and writer and has directed all six episodes.

The first reviews for the series have begun flooding in, and it’s good news for fans of the first season – which was released to critical acclaim back in 2014. Night Country currently boasts a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and is being both compared in quality and tone to the first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

BBC has awarded Night Country five stars, praising it as “fierce, absorbing [and] richly imagined” while sharing the DNA of the first season. The Telegraph also gave it five stars, citing an “astonishing” performance by Jodie Foster in what it describes as a “spectacular, terrifying and unforgettable” series.

So if you’re keen to see what all the fuss is about, here’s when True Detective season four is released and how to watch it with a Sky’s “lowest price” TV deal.
