President Joe Biden looked "unsteady and confused" as he boarded Air Force One after his holiday in the US Virgin Islands, a body language expert has said.

The President had just spent seven days lounging on the beach outside a luxury villa, owned by major Democrat donors Bill and Connie Neville.

Biden was seen looking sunburnt as he waved cheerfully at people on the tarmac at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in Christiansted. Ready to return to the White House, he seemed relaxed while meeting local politicians including Governor Albert Bryan Jr and Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett.

Body language expert Judi James, however, suggests other photos paint a "slightly different picture". She told The Mirror: "Walking to the plane and mounting the steps, Biden appears unsteady and confused to the point where it looks painful to see him without someone nearby to offer assistance if needed." In contrast, First Lady Jill Biden can be seen in the background, stood with confidence, Judi added.

Biden was spotted climbing the steps, gripping the handrail on his right. Judi thinks it might have been an attempt to show he could climb the steep steps without help. She added: "The possible vanity of proving Biden can walk up a very steep flight of steps that might challenge a younger man is probably less important than having someone close on hand if he does stumble."

After his week-long break, the president seemed in high spirits as he greeted people on the tarmac. This was a welcome distraction from the growing political storm over the US border and migration issues - especially after a record 300,000 people crossed into the US in December. When quizzed about the situation upon his return to the US mainland, Biden responded: "We gotta do something, they gotta give me the money I need to protect the border."

However, Judi believes Biden looked genuinely relaxed at the end of his holiday on the tarmac. "His smile in the photo as he performs a farewell handshake looks like one of genuine delight," she says. "But the angle of the hands suggest this shake was not instigated by Biden and that he is responding to a prompt."

She commented on Biden's cautious climb up the plane stairs, noting: "His walk up the steps looks careful but he seems to avoid the obvious precaution of keeping a firm grip on the handrail to help if he does trip. Instead he appears to propel himself along with the hand. Unfortunately, when he arrives at the top, his legs seem to be quicker than his upper body causing a moment of visible confusion as he turns to wave."

James suggests that Biden's attempts to appear youthful may backfire, stating emphatically: "There should be no stigma around aging because it can come with vital traits like wisdom and experience but pretending to be eternally physically young can sadly imply actual confusion and here that sadly seems to suggest Biden might benefit from a longer break rather than stepping back into the election battle."
