Rooney's NFL jibe comes back to haunt him after Brady wields Birmingham City axe

Wayne Rooney's awful 15-game spell at Birmingham City is over after the club's owners, including Tom Brady, sacked the manager.

Rooney won just two games during his time in charge of the Blues, overseeing a drop from sixth to 20th in the Championship table. The West Midlands club were dreaming of the Premier League when Rooney arrived, but now they're trying to avoid relegation.

Brum's decision to get rid of previous boss John Eustace to make way for Rooney has well and truly backfired. The former England captain's time in charge of the 2011 League Cup winners started badly, as fans dug out his old tweets regarding Brady.

Rooney shared his thoughts about the NFL during Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, a game which quarterback Brady started for New England Patriots. It's a game Brady won't remember too fondly, as New York Giants secured a 21-17 triumph in Indianapolis.

Rooney watched the action unfold live and shared his thoughts on Twitter. He wrote: "Trying to watch Super Bowl final. How do they call this football? Like watching paint dry. Looking forward to (the) adverts and music."

Madonna performed in the Super Bowl's famous half-time show alongside LMFAO, MIA, Nicki Minaj and Cee Lo Green. Rooney later added: "Seen more of (the) guys in the studio than the players at (the) Super Bowl. Zzzzzzzz. Hurry up music."

Rooney went on to claim that rugby league was better than the NFL. In fairness to Rooney, his opinion seems to have changed since those infamous tweets. He's since played and managed in the United States, and he even attended last year's Super Bowl.

Rooney also spoke very highly about Brady shortly after his appointment in October. "It’s great to have him here, it’s important for the players to see Tom Brady have an involvement," said Rooney. "It’s very clear that Tom is fully involved in the club."

Brady is a minority owner of Birmingham and the chairman of their advisory board, having arrived in August. Yet the NFL legend's working relationship with Rooney is now over following the latter's exit. It's unclear what role Brady played in Rooney's sacking.

Birmingham issued a brutal statement to confirm Rooney's departure, which was first revealed by Mirror Football, on Tuesday morning. It read: "Birmingham City has today parted company with manager Wayne Rooney and first-team coach Carl Robinson.

"Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the football club. The club’s board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organisation its fans and community deserve."
