FromSoftware’s open-world action RPG is punishing, but it's less so once you know how to run around the Lands Between.

First released for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in 2022, Elden Ring went on to win over 140 GOTY awards that year. It’s this kind of excitement and hype that has players eagerly anticipating the long-awaited Shadow of the Erd Tree DLC. It could drop as early as this February if a recently leaked product listing is to be believed. Until then, however, and in the absence of developer FromSoftware releasing a true action RPG follow-up in 2023, players continue to return to the Elden Ring base game.

If you’re someone who is now getting back into Elden Ring, or maybe picked it up over the recent Christmas break and are still finding your feet, there are a few tips worth knowing, with one of the main examples being how to run in Elden Ring. It might sound simple, but seeing as players have been conditioned to play patiently in other FromSoftware titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, the studio’s latest effort is much less linear, set in a grand open world. That’s why it’s well worth knowing how to run in Elden Ring if you hope to experience all there is to see in the Lands Between.

How to run in Elden Ring

If you want to run in Elden Ring all you need to do is hold down the B button when playing on an Xbox controller, or the Square button if you are using a PlayStation controller. From here, depending on how much weight your character is carrying, you’ll begin to pick up speed any time you push the left joystick in your desired direction.

You’ll know how fast you can run in Elden Ring based on what’s called your Equip Load, which directly impacts the amount of Stamina you deplete while activating the run. A Heavy Load won’t see you able to run for very long, for instance, while a Light or Medium Load will see your character getting around much quicker.

Just bear in mind that running in Elden Ring simply won’t be possible if your Equip Load hits 100%, so it’s worth not carrying around too much – you never know when you’ll need to make a quick getaway. Staying with a Heavy Load also makes dodging far more challenging too, so it’s something to always be wary of. However, if you haven’t exceeded 100%, you should be able to use the run in Elden Ring perfectly fine.
