Just as the winter begins to bite, the energy price cap has been raised which now means millions of homes will start paying more for their gas and electricity. The hike looks set to add around 5% extra to already inflated bills which continue to remain at record highs.

With the new price kicking in from today, January 1st, now is a good time to check your home and make some money-saving changes. Turning down the thermostat a few degrees and switching off lights when not being used is a good start but there are some other things to try including turning on energy-saving features on devices such as Sky Q boxes and your Samsung telly.

For example, Sky Q has an "Eco Mode" setting which puts this box into deep slumber when not being used overnight and stops it sucking so much energy out of the meter.

To check if your box is set to Eco Mode simply head to Settings > Setup and select Preferences . Here you'll find three different standby modes including the option to switch on Eco.

Next it's worth checking your telly with most manufacturers including Samsung offering ways to reduce energy.

These power-saving options basically change the screen brightness automatically. So, when you pop on the telly in the evening the display is reduced to a lower level, using less energy.

“If you are looking to save on the electricity and energy that your TV uses, pay attention to the Power and Energy Saving Features of your Samsung Smart TV,” Samsung explained on its website.

“You can reduce energy consumption by changing your power preferences and there are other energy-saving options.

“The energy saving features of the Samsung Smart TV can help reduce power consumption and reduce eye strain when you are watching TV in a dark room. Create comfortable screen conditions while controlling your energy consumption at the same time.”

How to reduce energy consumption on Samsung TVs

Step 1. Press the Home button and navigate to Settings.

Step 2. Select General > Power and Energy Saving.

Step 3. Choose a setting listed and press Select on your remote to turn the feature on

Of course, these changes won’t end all of your energy worries but every little helps and it will shave a few pence off of those outgoings.

Speaking about the upcoming price hike Emily Seymour, Which? Energy Editor, said: “January will see energy bills rise by about five per cent and with prices still significantly higher than they were before the energy crisis began, some households will still struggle to afford their bill.

“If you are concerned about paying higher bills, there is help available. Speak to your energy provider about a payment plan you can afford and check to see if you qualify for any government schemes.

“We’d recommend that everyone without a smart meter takes a meter reading on or close to 31st December to make sure they pay the lower rates for all units used before the price rise. Submitting meter readings on a regular basis is a good idea, and ensures you are billed correctly.

“Prices are predicted to drop in April. If you're on a variable tariff, then any reductions to the price cap will be automatically applied in April. If you are on a fixed deal, then it's worth checking the exit fees to see if you can leave early if prices do fall in spring and you want to switch back to a variable tariff or onto a cheaper fix."
