Biggest celebrities on The Masked Singer as judges blasted for wild guesses

With just one day until the new series of The Masked Singer hits our screens, viewers can prepare to sit back and watch a host of celebrities take to the stage to belt out songs under a disguise.

Fans of the ITV show were treated to a Christmas Day special which was won by TV chef Ainsley Harriott. Hosted by Joel Dommett, the panel is set to stay the same as Jonathan Ross, comedian Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall and singer Rita Ora, will do their best to reveal the identity of the celebrity underneath their elaborate costume. However, while a number of clues are given to the panelists in the hope of identifying the celebrity, the judges have been mocked by viewers for their wild guesses.

During the third episode of series two, Jonathan Ross could not have been more wrong when he wrongly guessed the Swan, who belted out Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much . Jonathan assumed that the clues leant itself towards chef Gordon Ramsay. But in fact, the Swan was singer and former EastEnders actress Martine McCutcheon.

But he was not alone as Mo Gillian thought the Mushroom was Scandinavian eco-warrior Greta Thunberg during the same series. He said at the time: "And then I heard the accent, you guys were hearing Lancashire and when she started singing I was hearing Scandinavian and I think it could be Greta Thunberg. A fun guy, fungus, Thunberg." But it was Charlotte Church.

Here are some of the biggest stars that have taken part in The Masked Singer

In series one, Rita Ora thought that Daisy was Meghan Markle from a series of clues. Daisy's first song was Can't Feel My Face by The Weekend and Rita was convinced that Daisy was royalty. She said: "It could be, she's married, came over here and was trying to start a new life and has a whole family now. I mean it's Meghan Markle, it's the Markle sparkle." The actual identity of Daisy was American star Kelis.

During the upcoming series, it has been reported that Rita will have to miss out on a few episodes but will be replaced by the former Voice mentor Olly Murs. Here we take a look at some of the biggest names to star on the singing show over the years on both sides of the pond.

Gladys Knight, 79

The Grammy award-winning singer and song writer starred on the US version of the show disguised as a bee. And during the final in 2019, Gladys' identity was revealed. Speaking of her experience the legendary star, who was 74 at the time, said: "We should always strive to do different kinds of things." She added: "It was kind of difficult for me because first of all you can’t see nothin. The eyes are so important. You know, just seeing you guys here look at me, let me look at you. Let me look at you and you and you. That’s what gives me courage."

Mel B, 48

The Spice Girl appeared on the show two years ago dressed as a seahorse. She claimed that she had attempted to be her Spice Girl bandmate Emma Bunton but things didn't go according to plan. Mo correctly guessed her identity but she had managed to fool her friends and family.

Speaking of her time on the show: "I'm really sad but also relieved because now I can go back to being me. My mum didn’t know, my kids didn’t know and the girls don’t have a clue.I loved Seahorse. She was so cute. I liked getting into this sweet, cutesy character which is a bit different for me. I signed up because she wanted to do a show that is fun, crazy, over-the-top and completely bonkers. I loved it." On pretending to be Emma, she continued: "I thought I disguised myself pretty well with my voice and accent, and trying not to be like me, I guess I didn't, did I?"

Mickey Rourke, 71

Three years ago, actor Mickey Rourke donned Gremlin outfit. But Mickey caused chaos after taking off his mask before the panel and the virtual audience had a chance to vote. Known to be a law unto himself, he told host Nick Cannon: "I want to take this off right now." This came straight after he performed Stand by Me by Ben E. King. Nick attempted to stop him and the panel begged him to keep the mask on as they desperately reminded him that "It's not that part of the show yet!

Alison Hammond, 48

Last year This Morning host Alison Hammond took part in a spin-off version of the show for the I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here special in November. Dressed as a Whitchetty Grub, Alison was the first celebrity to be unmasked. The presenter had joined the Aussie jungle in 2010. Speaking to Joel, she said: "People actually forget I was on I'm A Celebrity because I arrived half way through the show. I'm a million percent not a singer though. Hardest thing for me was not laughing and no I didn't choose to be a Witchetty Grub, it chose me."

Dick Van Dyke, 98

The Mary Poppins icon decided to sign up to the show aged 97, leaving panelist Nicole Scherzinger in tears due to shock. Dressed as the Gnome, the Hollywood star said in an interview at the time: "I was so positive that nobody would ever guess it was me, that they would have somebody 97 years old on there. I would say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever done. But they didn’t put a mask on me. They made a great big like Pumpkinhead thing that I had to do."

Ne-Yo, 44

The hit maker belted out Janet Jackson's famous song Rhythm and Rihanna's Take A Bow and went on to be crowned winner earlier this year. Speaking to People magazine of his win, he said: "We picked songs that were slightly outside of my wheelhouse, songs that you wouldn't regularly expect to hear me singing. I was very, very adamant about, ‘Listen guys, I do not want to get discovered quickly. Let's figure out ways to throw them off.’ ”

Nicola Roberts, 38

The Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts was revealed as the celebrity performing as Queen Bee after being crowned winner of the show. The runners-up were Hedgehog who was Jason Manford and in third place was Katherine Jenkins who had performed as Octopus. On being on the show, Nicola said: "“I’ve loved it. It’s piping hot in there."
