Silva's furious on-pitch reaction says it all after Chelsea hang on to Luton win

Thiago Silva was less than impressed despite Chelsea picking up another three points at Luton Town.

The Blues were in command at Kenilworth Road, taking a 3-0 lead in the second-half before they threatened a second-half collapse. Luton scored twice in the final ten minutes to set-up a grandstand finish as the Chelsea defence struggled to cope with their aerial threat.

Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo both scored after deliveries into the box and Silva, the leader of the Blues back four, made his anger known at full-time. He stood solo in the middle of the pitch, shaking his head before he pushed the camera away.

Shortly after, with tensions clearly still high, Silva was seen in a heat conversation with Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine was bought on late in the game to try and bring some calm to proceedings, but failed to do so and the Chelsea defender clearly had issue with some of his decision making.

He threw his arms about, articulating how he'd have dealt with certain situations. The pair ended with a hug having secured the three points but Silva was clearly frustrated with how they'd let a game, which they were in control of, almost slip out of their grasp.

Mauricio Pochettino said on his reaction: “Thiago is like this. The character of Thiago is always more, he’s never happy. He’s 39 and still playing, he’s so professional. I think we were there on the pitch but sometimes a small detail that you keep in your head, you want to show the team and your emotion is there. But for sure, now, he appreciates the effort of [young team-mates].”

Chelsea have rarely won successive games throughout 2023 such has been their struggles. However their success at Luton came after a late win against Crystal Palace, which has moved them into the top half of the table.

Silva has been a mercurial winner throughout his career, enjoying success in Milan and Paris before moving to Chelsea. Whilst at the Blues he's claimed Champions League glory and, despite his age, is still a key cog of their backline amid talk of extending his deal.

Noni Madueke, who scored the Blues' second goal, claimed their team's unity was key in seeing out the late Luton rally. He said on TNT Sports : "I feel like staying together in the last moments [was key]. We know it is a difficult place to come and we made it hard for ourselves but I am happy with the three points."
