Cops are investigating after staff in a chippy in Ireland ended up using food utensils to fight off a group of up to eight men who had launched a vicious attack.

The brutal brawl kicked off at a takeaway in the Republic of Ireland's second-largest city of Cork, with shocked staff forced to arm themselves and then batter the aggressors with a broom and a range of kitchen implements, including a pizza peel (a large shovel-like implement) and other kitchen utensils. The workers fought back fiercely as they tried to drive the gang out of the premises.

Three staff members came out from behind the counter brandishing the brushes and kitchen tools as they were charged by the group of men, exchanging a number of blows. Another worker remained behind the counter but struck aggressors repeatedly with a small utensil as they attacked his colleagues.

According to the Irish Mirror, which has seen video footage of the vicious brawl that took place on Wednesday night, one of the staff members charged toward the group of thugs and succeeded in pushing one of the men out the door, but slipped as he retreated and was brutally punched several times in the head by two of the gang.

However, he was then also wrestled to the ground and the man who he had pushed out of the restaurant stamped on him. But the plucky staff members were not going to be bullied into submission and one of the group who was punching a worker found himself on the receiving end of a painful blow from a large pizza peel and a black, metal utensil, which left him with bleeding from an injury on his forehead.

This seemingly shocked him and he beat a hasty retreat while holding his head. As he tried to get out of range of the kitchen tools, he nearly fell on top of people who were still battling it out on the floor, before he slipped on a wet area and went headlong forward.

That part of the action seems to have been enough of a shock to the other thugs for them to halt their attack and one of the group of aggressors came forward and pleaded for the restaurant workers to stop further hostilities, while one of the staff members retrieved his shoe.

Irish police – the Gardaí – confirmed that it attended a public order incident at a premises in Cork, but no arrests were reported. A spokeswoman for An Garda Síochána said: "Investigations are ongoing into this matter."
