Former Chelsea and England star Rob Green has opened up on the gruesome hand injury he suffered as a player, jokingly warning children not to follow in his footsteps.

Green made more than appearances during his time playing for Norwich, West Ham, QPR and Leeds. He also earned regular call-ups to the England squad and started the 2010 World Cup as the Three Lions' first-choice between the sticks.

While he was able to stay mostly problem-free as a player, his time as a goalkeeper has left him with a nasty-looking injury to his little finger. The top-half of the finger has been bent almost horizontally, with Green now speaking out on the issue.

“One of the tales of goalkeeping, don’t be a goalkeeper kids. After a long time playing in goal, it got injured, dislocated, broken numerous times, it slowly started to die," the former Chelsea star told Prime TV Sport.

“Then it gave up essentially, and it was when I started diving to my right and it starts sticking in the ground as I was diving that I thought, ‘Yeah, perhaps I might need to get seen to.’

“The glove manufacturers very kindly made me sort of a paddle hand, which had the two main fingers and then one larger finger where I could tape them together and keep it relatively straight.

“So for the last ten years of my career or so I had a finger brace within my gloves to help me survive through the games really. But yeah, it’s kind of stayed that way ever since and now it’s a nice icebreaker for conversations and stuff like that.”

Green ended his career with Chelsea, where he served as third-choice keeper. While he never made an appearance for the Blues, he was part of the squad that won the 2019 Europa League, allowing him to end his career on a high.

"Being part of the group and celebrations with such a special squad of players after winning the Europa League seems a fitting way to end what’s been an amazing journey for me in the game," he said at the time.

"I’ve loved every moment and feel privileged to have enjoyed the career I have. I’ve played with, and against, some of best players in the world and have experienced so much that professional football has to offer.

"I’ve had the joy of representing some fantastic clubs, all of whom have helped to shape me in their own varying way. Thank you to all of the fans. Representing my country will always be one of my proudest achievements and I feel honoured to have played for England.

"Thank you to all of the managers, coaches and staff I’ve worked with and thank you to all of the teammates that I’ve shared a dressing room with over the years. Collectively we’ve shared some amazing times and I leave the game with memories that I’ll always treasure."
