Van Gerwen labels darts rivals 'poo pants' as he offers Littler verdict

Michael van Gerwen claims his rivals who want to go under the radar at the World Darts Championship players are "poo pants".

The Dutchman is favourite to claim what would be his fourth title at Alexandra Palace and comfortably made into the last-16 stage following his straight sets victory over Richard Veenstra on Wednesday evening, dropping just three legs and averaging over 100.

Luke Littler has been the talk of the tournament so far, gaining huge media attention. Others though have been content to keep a quiet profile but Van Gerwen didn't miss his chance to take a swipe at those individuals.

When quizzed on those going under the radar he told claimed it was "because they are all poo pants. If they want to go under the radar, that's [raspberry noise]." Van Gerwen also dismissed any concerns regarding the crowd: "Me, worry about what the crowd does, really? I have more experience than that, I don't really care."

Littler could face the Dutchman later in the tournament with some tipping the 16-year-old sensation as a potential winner on what is his Ally Pally debut. Since his shock victory against Christian Kist in the first round his stock has gone through the roof.

Littler has drawn comparisons with Va Gerwen and the Dutchman admires his fearless nature, but doesn't think he is a match talent wise. Quizzed on whether he sees the similarities he said: "Yes and no. I think if you look like talent-wise then I think I was slightly better but he doesn't care whoever he plays and that's why I admire him.

"He's a big talent. Me and Vincent [Van der Voort] spoke about him and he has got one little thing in his throw on the end that I don't really fancy, but for the rest he can win a lot of tournaments in the future of darts - 100 per cent."

The Dutchman joked that he wishes the limelight, which has been firmly on the teenager, was directed at him. "I wish everyone gives me attention because when you get attention it's a pleasure, it's something good," he said. "Because when they talk about you it's a good sign. It means you still mean something to the sport."

Littler will take on either former world champion Raymond van Barneveld or Jim Williams in the last-16. Barney said: "There's a 16-year-old kid who is playing awesome darts and when I watch darts I want to watch a guy like him. I like fast, fluent and finishing. His celebrations are something and he's a character."
