Resolutions? They’d feel a bit like a bucket list, so we won’t be having any of them this New Year’s Eve.

Apart from one, and that one I made many months ago. I do my best to stick to it and it’s serving me well: to live in the moment. I’d recommend it to everyone.

Rooted in the moment, there’s no need to worry about what has happened, or what will happen next. Right now, I don’t have to think about the fact my gorgeous great nieces, Maureen’s son and his family, are off to the States to live on January 6.

Or that Coleen’s daughter Ciara isn’t far behind them, off travelling the world. (Oh God, please be careful, Ciara — and don’t look at us like that). I don’t have to think about the fact there’s a chance we won’t be together again. Right now, in this moment, we’ve had a fabulous Christmas, and are about to have a fabulous New Year’s Eve, courtesy of Coleen.

She does a great do, Coleen. Last year she had a pulled pork van outside. Fancy. And her sons Shane and Jake do the music and make sure to put on Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel for their old aunties. That always gets us up, we’re so predictable.

We’ll stay until 2am or 3am, but Coleen will generally stay up with the kids and make it until 7am. It’s the last celebration of the year so it needs to be a good one, and I wouldn’t be anywhere else. Going out for it has never been for me. There’s always some idiot who thinks it’s an excuse to kiss who they like. You’d think I’d be grateful, but I like to know who’s kissing me.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the moment. I wake up in the morning and think only of the day; that it’s another day to have a great time. Another great lunch in the park with friends, or a night of bingo with the girls, or karaoke at Denise’s. And if not a great time, then a day to do just what I can do, to look after myself, to make it the best it can be, even if that’s lying on the couch.

You don’t need to wait for a diagnosis like mine to try it. Grab the moment. Honestly, they really add up.
