Coronation Street fans 'rumble' affair twist after 'big' storyline teased

Coronation Street fans are convinced they've rumbled an upcoming shock affair twist after the ITV soap's boss teased a 'big' storyline in 2024.

On Christmas Day's episode, Tracy Barlow was left stressed out after learning she had to cook for more family members than she had initially planned for and after Ken Barlow insisted it was an alcohol-free meal, Tracy escaped to the flower shop where she ended up drinking Mary's present, which was a bottle of wine.

However, within seconds of being in the shop, Tracy was disturbed by Tommy Orpington, who needed a last minute gift. After making him pay through the roof for a plant, Tommy agreed but only if Tracy would use his decorating services in the future. Viewers will recall that fictional footballer Tommy has made several stints on the cobbles over the years and the local Weatherfield celebrity is returning for a longer storyline after a series of failed businesses and his wife leaving him.

It comes as Coronation Street boss, Iain MacLeod, teased earlier this year: "He’s now had to return to the trade he had when he was a non-league footballer, which is painter and decorator... significantly, he is now single. There might be one of our female characters that needs some decorating done, not a euphemism.

"There’s basically a story that evolves where this attractive, successful historically man arrives into one of our female character’s life and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion, shall we say?"

Iain added: "It’s very funny but potentially quite sad in certain places. It triggers something really big for us over the next 12 months, a big new direction for some characters so yeah, Tommy Orpington will finally be coming off the subs bench."

Taking to Twitter, now X, soap watchers are convinced Tracy and Tommy are heading for an affair storyline, especially as Tracy and husband Steve McDonald argued on Christmas Day. One person said: "Tracy and Tommy Orpington!! It looks like the start of something here then. #Corrie" with eyes emojis, a different account put: "First look at Tommy Orpington back on the cobbles look like an affair storyline for ar Tracy Barlow #Corrie" while another added: "Wonder if Tommy Orpington and Tracy will get together?"
