Six people have died and three injured following a major car crash on Boxing Day.

Multiple helicopters had to attend the horror crash which happened after 4pm in North Texas, US, on Highway 67 near Somervell/Johnson County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety the crash happened when a pickup truck and minivan crashed into each other head-on, with all the six people in the van killed.

It resulted in a “devastating scene” according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, who responded to the crash at the time. Traffic chaos ensued, with the Texas Department of Public Safety tweeting after the crash: "Major crash US 67, Johnson County, Nemo, area. Both directions closed. Seek an alternate route.”

Helicopters were called in by the paramedics to rush the three victims to hospital as quickly as possible. It is believed that there were children inside one of the cars, but it hasn’t been confirmed if any children died in the crash.

The air ambulances flew the surviving victims of the crash to John Peter Hospital and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth - but their condition is as yet unknown. At this time, the names of those who died in the crash have not yet been released.

Devastating photos of the scene show two smashed-up cars on the highway with debris scattered across the road as police investigated the scene of the tragic Boxing Day crash. Multiple police cars surrounded the scene of the tragic crash which led to the closure of the whole road.

In a Facebook post, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said: "Please say a prayer for the families of the deceased and injured. Also, please pray for our deputies, troopers, and all other first responders working this accident," adding that it is a “devastating scene” and “very emotional for all involved”.

The office stated that the highway would be shut for several hours and commuters would need to reroute if planning to pass through Highway 67. Chief Deputy James Saulter said according to the Sun : "Please stay clear of this area. It will help us take care of the injured and get this cleaned up much faster if you avoid trying to get close.”

He added: "We're using valuable time keeping folks away. You will not be allowed close to the scene. This is a devastating scene, please do your part by staying away. I assure you, it's not something you want to witness."

It comes days after a couple died in a crash just before Christmas. Chloe Stott, 24, and her husband Parker were preparing to tell their family the good news about Chloe’s pregnancy at Christmas when they tragically died on Highway 93 in Wickenburg, Arizona, after hitting a white Volvo.
