Coronation Street fans were left in tears this evening as Peter Barlow departed the Cobbles.

Peter has been struggling following the shock death of Stephen Reid, when he ran him over with his taxi fearing he was going to kill Jenny Connor. However, Peter has struggled since Stephen's death, feeling a bit lost as well as battling his own demons.

Tonight, Peter decided to leave Weatherfield for good, leaving his family and friends heartbroken. In an emotional episode, Carla and Peter looked over their long relationship before he packed his bags and headed for the tram stop to leave for good.

Fans watching the scenes were in tears as Peter bid farewell to the Cobbles. One said: "I will miss you so much Peter Barlow #corrie," whilst a second added: "Goodbye Peter Barlow it’s been great #Corrie." A third shared: "Little did we know when we met Chris in April that it’d be his final year on the cobbles. And what a privilege it’s been to watch him all these years! A class act through and through, effortlessly delivering nothing less than perfection every time. One of #Corrie’s modern greats."

Chris previously opened up about his final scenes, admitting he felt "moved" by the final scripts.

"We never rehearse the scenes really before we do it. You get one or two takes and I kind of know how Ali will play it. I just react and she reacts to me; that's the joy of it, really, and I think that if in a scene you don't know what's going to happen next, the audience don't. When I read that last script, it was emotional, not because I was leaving, but I genuinely, genuinely felt moved by it," he shared in a chat with the BBC ahead of his exit, "I think it's as well-written script as you're going to get at Coronation Street and I think most people will have had exactly the same thing in their life, so they'll identify with it."

He opened up about if he could make a return one day, insisting the door had been left open.

"Of course, I've not ruled a return out, it's been such a part of my life," he said, "I've grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I'm not getting any younger. The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don't just mean the actors. I've known all these people for nearly half my life."

Following his soap exit, Chris has been busy playing Captain Arthur K. Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan. But could he make a return to the Cobbles one day, or has Peter said goodbye to Weatherfield for good?
