Sheridan Smith revealed the struggles of filming in the blistering heat for her new series, The Castaways.

The series, which is based on a book of the same name, follows Erin (played by Céline Buckens) as she investigates what happened to her sister Lori (played by Sheridan) after the plane the latter was on suddenly disappeared. Most people accepted the story that everyone on the plane died in a horror crash.

However, Erin believes there's more to the story and ends up flying to the destination Fiji, to find out what truly happened to her sister - who she was meant to join on that flight. The majority of the series was filmed in Greece when the temperature reached intense levels and Sheridan admitted the make-up involved to make everything look authentic was 'a pain'.

Speaking to The Mirror and other press after a screening, she said: "I'm stupidly covered in tattoos so my makeup calls were at 5 am because when I'm filming in Britain, you can just wear a cardigan or just cover up but obviously there, I can't be on a tropical island and in a long sleeve.

"So yeah, the makeup calls were very early. And yeah, that was a pain."

Sheridan went on to discuss what it was like filming action-packed scenes - which involve a lot of difficult stunts and fights - in the sun.

The Gavin & Stacey star explained: "It gets hot. It gets really really hot. And there is a particular kind of agony of having fake sweat, which really is an irritant for the eyes and having real sweat making the fake sweat fall into your eyes, and then also being in front of cold water and being boiling in like 39-degree heat, but not being able to go in because you've got fake blood.

"And so it's sort of amazing and horrible."

Sheridan also had to face a lot of fears before she started filming the Paramount+ series. When asked how different her character, Lori, was to other ones she's played, Sheridan said: "Well, she starts off very much like a wallflower. I mean, she kind of brought up her younger sister and is a motherly figure towards her... I mean, I was terrified of water.

"And I'm in the water for most of the show. And I'm scared of heights and I was up a tree and on a cliff so it was a challenge but I like a challenge and I was in safe hands with the guys so I'm really pleased I took it. And we got to film in Greece for six weeks. I mean, how amazing."

The series will be available on Paramount+ on 26 December.
