Coronation Street viewers were left delighted to see one character make an emotional Christmas Day return.

Only recently, the hit ITV soap aired a heartbreaking exit for Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove. Bernie was sentenced to three months in prison for handling stolen goods. Bernie had been shifting the stolen goods in a bid to help son Paul Foreman, who is dying from motor neurone disease (MND).

Bernie had wanted to plead not guilty but, due to police having photographic evidence, she was advised to instead plead guilty, which, in the end, resulted in her being sentenced to three months in prison and potentially missing her son Paul's last Christmas.

On Christmas Day, Bernie made a sweet return via video as she called her family from the prison, where they filled her in on the day's festivities. Bernie said of her day: "Yeah, the food was alright! It's free, so can't complain! Is that Away in a Manger you're playing? That used to be your two's [Gemma Winter and Paul] favourite" the family then all sung the festive carol together.

Viewers were left delighted to see Bernie return as they took to Twitter, now X, to share their thoughts. "Bernie video calling her family at Christmas #Corrie," one wrote, as a second added: "The Winter - Browns having a sing song with Bernie from prison. Best scene of the episode. #Corrie."

Bernie star Jane joined the show back in 2019, as the mother of twins Gemma and Paul but she had also previously done a stint on the cobbles in the 1980s, where she played teenager Sue Clayton. With Jane departing the cobbles, it is likely her character will return properly in the coming months as Paul's health deteriorates and Gemma continues to struggle following her brother's diagnosis and mum's imprisonment.

Speaking about her time on the show previously, she said: "I was full of trepidation. There were no nerves whatsoever when I was 16. I knew it was a big job but I was incredibly confident. Turning up at 51 was a completely different ball game. When you’re a teenager, there’s the arrogance of youth, you don’t doubt yourself.

"But coming in as Bernie I was frightened ... I was worried that nerves would completely take over and I’d be an idiot and then I’d be through the revolving door and asked to leave as soon as I’d done my first day. I thought I’d forget my lines. I was worried about letting myself down and letting the show down."
