Richard E Grant can't imagine finding love after wife's death amid blind dates

Richard E. Grant has revealed that two years after the death of his beloved wife Joan Washington, he doesn't expect to ever find love again despite going on a few dates during that time.

The 66-year-old actor was married to Joan for 35 years, with his late wife passing away in 2021, aged 74, after she lost her battle with lung cancer just eight months after being diagnosed. The 'Withnail and I' star has admitted that despite having a couple of dates since his wife's passing, he "can't imagine falling in love again".

The Hollywood star has also admitted that he still writes to his late wife every day as he finds it too much to bear to think that she is no longer here. Richard said: "Ive now accepted that I will never understand it trying to imagine not being here is beyond my capacity for thinking.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Richard continued: "So, I write a letter to Joan every night about what's going on, and I find that it feels like I have a physical, tangible, ongoing conversation with her that's written down, I've found that really, really helpful. Anticipating what she might think about this, or what is her opinion about that? Even the most mundane things."

In the two years since Joan's death, Richard said that friends have set him up on blind dates but finding love again is not a priority for him and not something he is really considering. The actor continued: "I think that what was so extraordinary about her is that I felt like I was truly seen and understood by another human being in a way that nobody else has even come near." The actor also added that he is "certainly not internet dating" and admitted it "is so hard to conceive" the thought of getting into another committed relationship.

With Christmas around the corner, Richard has said that he and daughter Olivia have kept certain family traditions going including the hanging on the tree of photos of those who are no longer with them. This started after his first daughter, Tiffany, died shortly after she was born prematurely and is now joined by photos of Joan, with Richard saying that he and Olivia "feel her spirit"

The previous month Richard celebrated what would have been his 37th wedding anniversary with Joan and paid tribute to his late wife with a series of photos of them together. Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, the actor captioned the montage of pics: "Posthumous 37th Wedding Anniversary today. Am profoundly grateful for the decades long partnership I shared with the extraordinary love of my Life, Joan Washington."
